Viper Dan1 Carbon Fibre

Viper Dan1 Carbon Fibre

The Viper Dan was designed to in answer to a specific contemporary need: to carry a knife, suitable for everyday life, yet not considered offensive. To add to this it can be easily opened with one hand, and without a locking system. Designed by Tommaso Rumici, the Viper Dan is their first sports folder equipped with mechanical Action Stopper®, now thoroughly tested over many years since its debut. The system is similar to that used on their Britola and Regional series: offering the right resistance to be safe in generic uses, but definitely unsuitable for violent uses. The name is followed by a number that identifies the blade shape and hides the acronym "Daily Assorted Needs" that suggests the great versatility of this small folder.

Viper Dan1 has a Clip Point Blade, Viper Dan2 has a Wharncliff Blade.

  • Blade: Böhler N690Co stainless steel; vacuum and cryogenic heat treatments; hardness HRC 57/59; finished thickness 3 mm; satin finish.
  • Locking mechanism: AS patented system (Action Stopper).
  • Liners: dual AISI 420C tempered liners.
  • Scales: Carbon Fibre, Green G-10, Burgundy Canvas.
  • Fasteners: AISI 303 stainless steel pivot screw and fasteners.
  • Spacer: GR2 Titanium anodized.
  • Clip: AISI 420 tempered stainless steel.

  1. Three years on... Still five starsReview by
I reviewed this knife in 2015 when I first got it. More than three years on, my DAN1 has weathered daily use in some pretty testing environments and I stand wholeheartedly by my first impressions.
This is the best non-locking knife I've ever owned and significantly safer than a slip joint because the tang allows me to put my thumb on the back of the blade for control without snapping it closed on my finger.
The detents have retained their solidity and I have never had this knife open accidentally (a complaint of one reviewer).
The tang will allow one-handed opening with thumb pressure. I regard the fact it takes a grown-up level of strength as a safety feature: It stays positively closed until I decide otherwise.

Got to agree with Dan on this. Its a beautiful knife but the lock is bad. To nice to use but if your going to beware so what's the point. (Posted on )
  3. Very happy with the Dan1Review by
I think this knife is excellent. It feels very sturdy and fits my hand so well. (Good ergos) a lot of people say it doesn't feel safe but I strongly disagree. The extended tag gives plenty of grip and confidence to ensure it won't fold. The quality is great and you can just tighten the pivot screws if you think it's to easy to fold. Really nice carbon and hardware toon (Posted on )
  4. Disappointed Review by
This is my second uk legal EDC knife I have bought....first was the böker plus XS that I could not fault
I was very excited to get the dan1 as I liked the concept of slip joint/friction folder.

The quality is superb as you would expect for a £100 knife and out the box was sharp....but after handling it I have come to the conclusion that it was not the knife I thought it would be and it could of been so much better....

Next to the XS the slip joint is weak and does not inspire confidence when open..arh that's ok I hear you say you have the fiction folder style tang to hold it in place.....Wrong...the tang is not long enough to also inspire confidence., the friction folder style tang ends too close to the pivot to be effective ....

Only had it 2 hours and I'm already thinking about modifying it to make it (in my eyes the knife it should of been) not a good start.....maybe I just expected too much...maybe I got a faulty one with a weak ball indent.maybe my thoughts on what this knife was was wrong....all I know is It could and should of been SO much better.....

I know people will disagree with me on this review but what I was expecting was a high quality uk legal carry friction folder that would not open in your pocket.

Maybe there is a way of tightening the ball indent to make it a more positive notch when open but after paying £100+ I'm a little hesitant to strip it down. Disappointing

  5. Perfect EDCReview by
The build quality of this knife is just superb. I realise at over a hundred pounds that it should be, but is beautifully engineered and just a pleasure to hold. It's wonderfully proportioned and manages to feel substantial without being heavy or cumbersome. I have large hands, wedding ring is a size Z, and it is just the right size.

It is incredibly sharp right out of the box, to the point that I haven't even bothered to strop it.

The pocket clip allows it to sit low in my pocket and it is unobtrusive weather I'm in jeans or a suit. I really couldn't be happier.

My previous EDC was a Spyderco UKPK but I grew tired of having to explain its legality to work colleagues, I'm a copper, who assumed that it was illegal without actually applying the legislation. No one has given the Viper a second glance other than to complement it.

  6. Legal Perfection Review by
This is probably the best UK legal knife on the market. The fit and finish is faultless, and operation is sturdy but smooth. This is really a thing of beauty,. This knife goes everywhere with me when out doors, safe in the knowledge that I'm not breaking the law in England. Quite simply, this is as good as it gets, for a non locking knife,. . Sorry, did I mention that it's beautiful , . (Posted on )
  7. At last! A good knife I can carry in the UKReview by
I've been carrying this knife for a couple of weeks now (because I can!) and its such a pleasure to have a decent sized blade available without rummaging in my rucksack.
The Dan1's blade does not feel like a compromise to get under the 3" bar for UK EDC. It's well ground, sharp (and stays sharp) and broad. The extended tang isn't so long as to be awkward in your pocket but is long enough to allow easy one-hand opening with a little practice (Be honest, guys. We all practice opening new knives.)
The blade retention system works. the main safety feature on this sort of knife is the extended tang. If that's under your thumb, it's not closing up on you.
A previous reviewer suggested a slip joint or line lock would be better. Well, a slip joint CAN close on your fingers and a liner lock would stop this knife from being UK friendly.
Back to the retention. The Dan1 blade only moves under direct force. No spring means no snapping closed. Detentes hold it open, half open or fully closed and they are strong. The initial force required to open the blade is significant enough that it takes a grown-up. I'd trust this knife to be child-proof. That's a significant safety feature if you have small kids around, just in case the little tikes find where you keep it.

    Safe in use
    Safe in your pocket
    well designed
    well made

Good value too, for an N690CO blade and a CF handle.

  8. Mixed Initial FeelingsReview by
Ordered this on Friday afternoon and received it on Saturday morning, usual awesome HH service :)

I have very mixed feelings about this knife....

On the one hand it is absolutely stunning to hold and admire, the carbon fibre is beautiful and has a 3 dimensional quality to it. The pocket clip is a nice design and is very deep carry. Blade shape is one that I really like, similar to that of a RAT II, but more refined! The knife is fun to sit and play with and feels fairly ergonomic. Overall this knife oozes quality.

On there other hand, after a couple of hours of having the knife clipped to my pocket I noticed that the blue anodized titanium spacer seemed to have some wear to the finish on the end right next to the clip. I don't know if the knife arrived like that (it's not something I would have noticed straight away), but being that it doesn't seem to have worn any more after carrying the knife for a full day I'm now fairly convinced that it came like that. Slight disappointment there, but I suppose it's not all that noticeable and at least it doesn't seem to be getting worse like I was initially worried.

The "Dan 1 Viper" logo on the side of the blade feels like it would wear off, I am yet to find that out.

The biggest downside of this knife is the Action Stopper (non)locking mechanism; it doesn't feel very safe at all! I honestly think that if the designer had gone for a traditional slip-joint with a stiff back-spring, that the knife would have been miles better. Or a liner lock.

If you compare the Viper Dan to the Boker Plus Trance 42 (which has a similar ball-detent type mechanism), the Boker feels far safer since it has an extended finger guard that prevents the blade from closing on your fingers. The Dan knives do not have that, the tang does not even come up flush with the finger choil so if the blade folds it doesn't even meet any resistance from your first finger until it has already rotated through a good 30 to 40 degrees or so. The need to use your thumb on top of the tang in an attempt to hold the blade open means that you can only use the one hand position to stop the knife from folding, and even then it's not very safe.

Viper, please make a MkII of this knife with either a strong slip-joint, or an extended finger guard / flipper. A liner lock version would be appreciated too! This is a sexy but somewhat flawed knife, or is it a somewhat flawed but sexy knife? I'm not sure.

    9/10 for fit / finish / aesthetics
4/10 for design functionality (maybe I'm being a little harsh, but I feel that the safety mechanism could be made significantly better with very minimal changes).
