I tend to favour carrying 2 layer knives in my pocket, as they fit in the coin pocket in the front of my jeans. I've had a Hiker (3 layers, with a saw) for 20 years, but have only ever carried that in my rucksack pocket when camping or hiking. It just seemed to fat in my pocket, and the wider knives felt a bit too fat in the hand for me (not that I have small hands, I just wasn't used to them).

It therefore took me a while before I bought a larger knife with more tools on.

Over the last couple of years I've discovered the Compact (2 layers with scissors) and the Wenger Evolution 14 (3 layers, with scissors). Both were more pocketable than the hiker (the Wenger is only 85mm long, which means it's less noticeable in my pocket than a 91mm Victorinox). I realised I found the scissors very useful.

I wanted a knife that could live in my glove box of my vehicle, that would do everything I might need in the outdoors, should I find myself out camping. Size wasn't going to be an issue, as it would never live in my pocket.

The Huntsman or Fieldmaster were both options, but when I saw the Evolution 23 had a magnifying glass, I realised that could come in very handy.

I'm very pleased with my decision.

All the standard tools are top notch (and I prefer the extra belly of this blade design to the standard 91mm Victorinox blade), and I really value the nail file. Since I bought my first Wenger 3 years ago I've stopped using nail clippers and only use SAK files to do my nails. They work really well, so my "do everything" knife really needs a nail file on it.

The magnifying glass is the only place where I can see much room for improvement. The lens is small, and the plane of focus is very shallow, which causes anything that's not in the centre of the lens to warp significantly. The magnifier on the Victorinox Explorer is significantly better in this regard (in fact it's very good), even though the Evolution 23's magnifier has a higher magnification power.

I've not tried lighting a fire with it; it may be better for that than the Explorer's for all I know.

However, I picked up a very small tick last week, and the magnifier came in very handy. The tick was so small that I couldn't be sure it was a tick with the naked eye. I fetched the Evolution 23, could see it clearly with the magnifier, and had it out in no time.

As a random aside, I've recently started carrying SAKs on a small pocket clip that dangles it down the side of my front pocket. You can carry a much thicker SAK that way, without noticing its presence. It works okay with the Explorer – I need to try it with the Evolution 23 to see how that feels…

Love the configuration on this model, great selection of tools in a compact frame.

I am a fan of the Explorer, but have always yearned for a saw in that package - well, here it is!

Equally at home in the office or field. All *, no filler!

Now if it was in Evogrip scales I might just loose my mind - that would be over the top cool.

Yep it's a little bit more expensive than some other models, but 40 odd quid for a life long companion? Got to be worth it, surely.
