Description

Not just any old knife, but the B.W. Baker Peasant Knife. Such an old concept that it's new; so new that it's old. B.W. Baker, Master Cutler, felt that the idea of creating his latest knife range was calling to him from the past. Using old fashioned methods and relying on the oldest low-tech methods, Svord™ proudly present their Peasant Knife. What does it do? Well, it cuts. Sure, there are knives around today that sprout scissors, sawblades, an entire motor mechanic's tool kit, laser beams and micro cell phones. Such knives have lost the very reason for their existence - that's high-tech for you. If you want a knife, a knife to cut things with, the Svord™ Peasant Knife is for you.

Definatly something peasenty about this knife. If I were a peasent I think I would be happy with this knife. Safe to hold as the hand holds the lever down which open/closes the knife! Got mine shaving sharp and blued the blade with a blow torch ;) Only neg it that the screws are not flush but it's solid.

  2. Good knife but high price for a basic design.Review by

First of all let me say I like this knife, on its own merits it is a very good outdoor/camping/bushcraft knife. But for the price you can buy other better finished knives and have change.

As has been said many times the handle is not finished as well as it could be. On my knife the sides of the handle were slightly different in size and the varnish finish is a sloppy job. Easy, and quite enjoyable, to strip, sand and wax to get a nice finish but for £35 why doesn't the manufacturer do this for you?

The blade comes sharp and takes a lovely edge. The grind on mine was a little uneven, again for the price this is a little naughty.

I love the design and old fashion style of the knife. It is genuinely a classic and a must have for any collection.

In summary this is a great knife. Unique, stylish and a nice bit of kit. However, if you are buying this as a user it's worth considering that for the price of one of these you could buy three Opinels or three, maybe four, Moras. I do really like it but I can't help thinking it is a peasant knife that is out of the price range of most peasants.

  3. Decent, basic knife.Review by

It's a practical woodland-use type blade that will take and hold a sharp edge. It's a very simple design and easily dismantled and adjusted. Seems reasonably but not immensely strong. I think it's a decent knife with some historical interest. Not entirely sure about its cult status online. I've ground off a bit off the back of the blade to make it UK carry legal which is great as I can take it camping with no worries about accidentally forgetting to take it out of my pocket or car and later getting nicked for it.

Really for nigh on £30 for the wooden scales, you're not getting that much. If I bought another one I'd get the plastic one where I think the price makes it solid value.

Ok, let me start off by saying thanks for the pressie Rhys!
This is not a top end knife as we all know. This hasn't got the best blade in the world and the wooden scales are...erm...rustic to say the least and 'yes' the lower end scales do close together when the blade is swung out. But, this is a brilliant tool! If you want a knife to put in a glass case then stop reading - this is not the knife for you. If, however, you are in need of a tough bladed, easy to maintain workhorse then you may be in luck. I have used this since October '13 and have sharpened it once. It has retained the edge well and after a bit of sanding down and lots of linseed oil the handle is silky smooth, comfy and looks pretty darn good. This is all for less than ú20! A simple, effective and trusty knife and one I recommend.

    Great :
    - Very simple and efficient design
    - Good steel (easy to sharpen, great cut)
    - Nice blade shape (efficient and powerful)
    - Assembled with screws !!! Disassemble to clean, sand, oil and pamper it. Reassemble and get a knife made to your liking.
    - Very light !
    Bad :
    - Badly finished blade : rough and asymetrical cutting edge, clipped point.
    - Badest handle ever seen. Raw low end average red wood, light as balsa, shaped with a spoon... disappointing is a weak word.
    - Totally shitty assembly. When closing the blade, it thrusts apart the scales !!! Some shims are definitely needed at the butt end assembly screw.
Anyway, the essentials are right. Add some brass or stainless shims at the butt. Cut the silly pointed butt and round it. File and sand the raw edged handle to a decent, handy shape. Sharpen and correct patiently the blade : you'll get a one of its kind knife with very dependable abilities. (Almost) hate at first sight, but love on the long term, I believe.

This was my first order from HH and the service was excellent.

The knife has a beautiful blade and a reasuringly solid action. The handle probably won't suit everyone as it is...rustic. But that is the essence of its charm, if you don't like it, get one of the plastic or metal ones!

Absolutely love it and I have already placed my next order with HH.

Much bigger than I thought it would be! As it comes it is a nice knife. With a small amount of work, sanding down the wood and giving it a linseed oil finish, this knife is excellent! It comes sharp and seems to hold a good edge. No frills just what I wanted. Superb is not too strong a word for this knife. (Posted on )

Great blade, horrible handle. Strip the varnish with acetone, sand the wood smooth, then treat the wood with beeswax. You will transform a brilliant value knife into a beautiful, brilliant value knife. My first purchase from HH, and a great experience - order placed Sunday afternoon, despatch e-mail received Monday morning, goods delivered Tuesday. So - a great knife from a great retailer. I heard alot of good things about his knife so decided to get one. out of the box it's sharp and pretty good but with a little work on the handle finish and edge then it's brilliant. It holds a great edge for a good time, the blade length is over 3" but UK law says the cutting edge must be under 3" not the blade, so just grind about 5mm from the bottom of the blade if you want it for edc! Brilliant, simplicity itself. Had to trim mine to make it my EDC set as a clip point rather than a drop point. (Posted on )

A good simple knife, but I was unsure about its legality for EDC in the UK, so I've taken off about 1/4 of an inch in a drop point fashion.
Even though the blade is pretty thin, it wore out 3 hacksaw blades, so I am very confident about its strength.

More robust than my beloved Opinel yet just as functional. Equally at home on the dining table, at work or around the campsite. Easy to open and easy to sharpen. A 400 year old classic! (Posted on )

Bought this when HH introduced it. Nice steel, sharp from box, and keeps its edge. Opens with one hand and is technically ?non-locking?. As the backpin floats free the blade is held by compression of the scales as well as thumb pressure, wrap a lanyard round and its as good as a fixed blade. Take a grinder/file to the blades last few mm for UK Street Legal. For me, just too big overall for an EDC (and frankly, just too peasanty!), One for the allotment. (Posted on )
  16. Excellent budget folderReview by
    Rating
Bigger than I expected, but well made and the steel appears similar to that of an Opinel, which should make sharpening easy.

The knife has a similar "locking" system to a cut-throat razor, and is very secure in use, not far short of a conventional lock.

It comes nicely packaged with a lifetime warranty

If you think of this as a budget utility knife, capable but cheap enough to lose/break (like the Mora Frost knives ) you won't be disappointed.
