Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker

Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker

Spyderco's Tri-Angle Sharpmaker includes two sets of high Alumina Ceramic stones: A pair of medium grit (dark) stones for aggressive sharpening, and a pair of fine stones (white) for professional grade finishing. There is also a set of brass safety rods to protect the user's hand during sharpening.

For sharpening plain edges, the flat sides of the stones are ideal. For serrated edges use the corners.

The stones fit into keyed holes and slots moulded into the polymer base and have a 40 degree and 30 degree sharpening angle for knives and a 12.5 degree scissor setting.

A groove running the length of the stone is for sharpening pointed objects like darts, awls and fishhooks.

All components pack into the base and the lid snaps shut making the 204 self contained and small enough to carry in your shirt pocket.

No lubrication is required during use for dry, mess-free sharpening.

Includes instruction DVD and book.

This set is listed by Spyderco as "204MF".

  1. Keenly appreciated...Review by
Wish I’d bought this sooner. Works well for tougher steels like 440C and D2. One word of advice: for fine points like fillet knives or small pocket knife blades with needle-like tips, ease off on the lateral pressure as you near the point of the blade. Otherwise it is easy to snap off half a millimetre or so of the tip of the blade. Oops!

Once the basic technique is mastered this can be used for many sorts of edged tools. For cases where quite a bit of material needs to be removed, as with reprofiling a blade, a coarse stone and manual grinding is best. A Svord Peasant Mini arrived with uneven grinds. One side did not match the other. After a few minutes on the coarse stone, the Sharpmaker improved the edges tremendously. Stropping finished things off nicely.

To get rid of the wire edge from sharpening, try cardboard smeared with buffing compound. It will quickly get rid of fine burrs and save your posh leather strop from premature disintegration.

The same approach worked to restore the edge on my old Estwing hatchet, which had been chipped whilst removing a stump in the garden. A bit of work on a stone then a session with the Sharpmaker sorted things out.

Overall this is a brilliant bit of kit. Very well recommended!

Superb delivery from HH, as ever.

  2. Great productReview by
After much research for what suited my requirements i bought this, it has sharpened all of my knives without issue.

Obviously more expensive sharpening systems out there depending on far down the knife lovers rabbit hole you are, but this will be more than sufficient for most people.

  3. This Really WorksReview by
I received a Sharpmaker for Christmas and after eight months I can say that it certainly works. A bit of practice is needed to get the strokes at a constant pressure and vertical, but even early attempts sharpened blunt knives to be able to slice copier paper. The more practice you have, the better the results, like everything in life.

This is as safe and well designed knife sharpening kit as you will find. The instructions are clear and the DVD useful in demostrating exactly what is required to get the best results. The stones are easily cleaned when required.

It is obvious why this kit has sold for decades. It works!

  4. I should have bought one six months ago.Review by
After getting mediocre results with a Lansky Turn Box for a few months,i finally broke down ,bit the bullet and got this sharpener.I used to think my knifes were sharp, but it turns out they were not.I spent an evening practicing with this kit,and now all my knife's are proper sharp .Everyone who can't really get on with freehand sharpening should think about one.Love mine.
HH as usual delivered nearly before i bought it ....Many Thanks.

  5. BrilliantReview by
Have tried many horizontal sharpening stones and will admit I am hopeless at getting the angle consistent. But within minutes I was getting fantastic results with this bit of kit. Easy to use, great dvd showing you how to use it and a good little instruction manual.
Is not cheap, but will work for so many cutting tools it is a godsend.

Get it, you will not be disappointed.

  6. Excellent bit of KitReview by
22 people cant be wrong, so I was a bit wary, but works perfectly and can use it for my blades even done the missus cloth sissors. Get a spare rod and keep in your fishing kit brillinat for hooks.

A good quality simple sharpener that just works.

  7. Good for beginnersReview by
Honestly my go to recommendation for beginners, takes close to little skill and the edge you get by following instructions is more than enough.

They also got beveling and apexing down which is rare.

Cons: Expensive for something essentially old, Medium rods cut far to slow which not only has beginners sharpening for hours the first time but also increases chances of making a mistake by tedious repetition, rods often come bent off-setting angle, and the overall plastic construction is mediocre.

Like i said not bad for beginners, but as others have said, not a substitute for skill and to make it truly effective you need the coarse rods which add even more expense.

  8. SHARPMAKER Review by
This is a very tidy design, and I think it is very good value for money. I only sharpen Spyderco folders on mine, for anything else I use a different system. Don't allow you bevel to deteriorate too much, and you will stay out of trouble. Don't forget to remove the glaze from the fine(white) rods, and you will then enjoy the results of you labour. (Posted on )
  9. It's not a substitute for skillReview by
Let me explain, this will only work if your knife already has a correct angle set on the secondary bevel. Most knives that arrive blunt have said bevel set too steep, that's why they are blunt. This system will not remove enough metal fast enough to achieve a 20 degree angle that is flat and accurate, you would need hundreds of strokes, even if you were patient enough to do this the inevitable fatigue would cause you to round the bevel and not achieve a good edge. I'm not talking about convex grinds as they are generally thin enough at the edge to benefit from slight roundness, but this system is not for convex grinds. This kit is not a total loss as the rods are useful and it will touch up blades that already have a correct angle on the bevel. It works better on pocket knives than large blades and is brilliant on serrated blades,I use mine in the kitchen as a quick fix.If you are new to sharpening don't start on your best knife it will end in tears, get an old kitchen knife and a cheap oil stone and practice and practice. When you've mastered it, and not every body can , buy yourself some good sharpening stones from Heinnie .I would recommend Japanese water stones but beware they are expensive and do wear out Arkansas stones are worth having too. If you cant master it find someone you can trust to do your best knives for you.I'm not trying to be smug but to save heartache for anybody new to the game. Finally please realize that a lot of knives produced now have such a thick edge grind that it's impossible to sharpen them without re profiling the entire blade.Fine if you want to smack your knife through a log but not if you want to cut things with it.I've been collecting long enough to remember when things like a mk2 Gerber came out of the box hair popping sharp with a zero grind. 10. Well perfromingReview by
The Sharpmaker is a well designed. cleverly thought-out piece of kit.. It can sharpen just about any tool or knife you might have in your house. It's very good with fish hooks, hawkbill blades and serrated blades. If you don't have the hand-eye coordination of a world-class sportsman (I freely admit I don't) then maintaining a consistent angle with a traditional carborundum whetstone is tricky. The way the Sharpmaker rods are set up in the base, all you have to do is keep the tool or knife vertical. Takes out the guesswork and produces good results.

So why only four stars? The rods have a slight wobble when inserted in their slots, which can be quite disconcerting, especially when you're applying lateral pressure. Also, with dull, soft steel knives, the rods take off too mch steel, so the rods need cleaning each time. With these sort of knives, you're better off starting with a whetstone and using the Sharpmaker when you've got a rasonable edge.

    I quite liked the video.

    Usual great service from HH.

  11. Versatile, great for beginners!Review by
A fantastic bit of kit and great for newbies like me! I'm not saying you will become an instant sharpening wizard, but with a little practice you will be getting hair popping sharp edges!

It comes with a handy reference booklet and a instruction DVD. Although the DVD is super cheesy, it's well worth a watch as it shows you how to sharpen different styles of knife and other tools such as scissors and chisels.

It may seem pricey for what it is but seeing as it can be used to sharpen and maintain various other tools about the house I think it's well worth the cash.

And as always, Big thanks to Heinnie for the outstanding service

  12. Patience, and consistency is the key.Review by
I cannot add anything more on the quality and workmanship of this sharpening system. Just a piece of advice: Keep your angle consistent between alternations and do not worry about the angle degree. Consistency is the solution for a hair-splitting edge. (Posted on )
  13. Good but expensive, some limitationsReview by
I've managed to get some knives razor sharp with this, to the point they'll easily slice cleanly through paper and shave hair.

However, don't expect it to work miracles. I tried to sharpen some dull kitchen knives and the results were poor. I think the supplied rods are good for knives that are in reasonable condition to begin with. There are some more abrasive diamond rods available at significant extra cost.

It probably could sharpen those kitchen knives with a lot more effort and time, but the whole point of set like this is that it saves you effort and time.

Nearly ú60 for a plastic box with four ceramic rods is expensive, and it should really cope with all levels of required sharpening at that price.

An additional set of more abrasive rods for initial shaping of very dull knives should be included as standard.

  14. Don't think; buy it.Review by
My first effort with the Sharpmaker (a well blunt Goldhamster Solingen kitchen knife) produced an edge that not only popped hairs but was only a strop away from straight-razor sharp. That took about 5 minutes.

I was initially put off by the price, but having used it I think it's pretty foolproof and well worth the money.
If you have Spyderco knives with serrated edges, it's a necessity; otherwise it's a real luxury compared to other sharpeners.

  15. Slices of paper everywhere.Review by
There is nothing more to add to these reviews. The Sharpmaker is a quality piece of kit.

    I would recommend searching both:

jdavis882 and XACTO on YouTube for their sharpening techniques.
They have great but quite different techniques.

If you have zero sharpening experience you will get your blades razor sharp (look out phonebook). I would suggest marking the edges of your knife with a sharpie pen to ensure you are catching the bevel just right. As jdavis882 says; It is not so much about keeping the blade perfectly vertical as keeping your technique consistent.

It is a compact and solid unit, nothing will rattle if you are throwing it in your bergan for a week in the woods.

I actually received a chipped rod from Spyderco (As the packaging is sealed). An E-mail to HH and I had a replacement in 4 days (inc Sunday and me returning the damaged rod for inspection).

First class service many thanks to Olly.

  16. works but needs more anglesReview by
it will get the factory shaving sharp edge with the ultrafine stones but i found using just the flats of the stone in this video:

is much faster/sharper than the method spyderco says and doesnt round off the tip.
the drawback of the sharpmaker is that it cant do a micro-bevel edge off less than 40 degrees (check out the guys videos above for why having the micro-bevel is important), even though it will shave at 40, it does give noticeably more resistance to cutting. they should have had more holes or an adjustable system to give 30degree microbevel edge on thin/full flat grind knives.

  18. Works very wellReview by
The reviews below say it all. Though pricey, this is a good bit of kit that WORKS. If you've spent ú100s buying knives, IMO it's worth spending a bit more to make sure you can keep them sharp.

I used to avoid using my good knives because I worried I'd never get them sharp again: this thoroughly designed product solves that problem. What else would you expect from Spyderco. The video, if a bit cheesy, also provides a good explanation of how to get the best out of it and is worth watching. Recommended.

  19. works even for meReview by
    Tried Lansky, DMT stones, allsorts.
This enables me to easily put an edge I'm pleased with on my knives.
I find it easier with smallish knives.
    Heinnie service superb.

  20. Simple and extremely efficientReview by
I bought this at Nick's suggestion, to replace a Lansky kit, which is itself extremely good. The Sharpmaker, however, is a step up. I am very, very impressed. If you're a sharpening numpty, you definitely need to buy this system. It works on exactly the same principle as the Lansky i.e. keep the knife blade vertical and draw it down the rod, but with the Sharpmaker there are 4 individual steps to get your blade sharp, and it makes all the difference. Knives that were Lansky's version of scary-sharp are now even sharper. Buy one, you won't regret it.
My only complaint is that the DVD didn't work, it won't play at all. This wasn't a problem - there's an instruction manual that comes with the Sharpmaker, and the video is on YouTube (in 4 parts) if you feel the need to watch it.

  21. you wont regreat this buy!Review by
Been putting off buying these for a few years due to the price so have used other flat grit deeply regret that...this sharpmaker is outstanding... revived an old Wenger knife from severly dull to scary sharp (whittling leg hairs off) in about 3 minutes. If you have a knife collection this is a must buy, probably the best knife accessory to purchase and so easy to use my wife sharpened her kitchen mess. As usual outstanding service by HH....many thanks. (Posted on )
  22. Essential buy!Review by
I cannot recommend this product highly enough. Give the supplied DVD and handbook a good looking over and you're all set to go. It has breathed a new lease of life into every blade I own. I'd have to say it's one of those products that you wonder how you ever lived without it! Also, exemplary service from Heinnie Hayes, thank you very much. (Posted on )
  23. ExcellentReview by
I've had this a week or so now and it's able to sharpen a Cold Steel Bushman enough to shave the hairs off my arm, which for a total amateur when it comes to sharpening, is impressive.

I've used it on about 8 different knives and steel types and it's so easy to use. You do notice the difference when you clean the stones and to do that I just use spit on a hanky and it seems to work fine rubbing off all the steel powder.

I was lucky enough to see it demonstrated by Nick in the showroom which convinced me enough to get it and you should too if you want to take the guesswork out of sharpening anything from knives to scissors to nail clippers and the way it brought back my 10 yr old Spyderco serrated edge back to razor sharp was astonishing in just a couple of minutes.

  25. Sharpening finally made easy!Review by
I have been using various sharpening systems to keep my steel sharp and have finally found a system that is foolproof, easy to use and gives a wicked edge.

Spyderco have stuck to the tested principle of having the user hold the knife vertical and slicing it down a rod which is positioned in an angled holder. Quite simply, it is way easier to keep a consistent angle, so, after very little practice you can bring your knives to a wicked level of sharp. The medium rods are used first and give you a working edge at the correct angle, the fine rods come into play then and put the finishing touch to the edge. Very, very nice bit of kit, well thought out. The only selling point you need is that this is a bit of kit that actually works!

  26. Excellence in a boxReview by
This sharpening system is great. Compact, well thought out and easy to use. 20 strokes on each stone makes a dull edge hair popping sharp. As noted below dvd is cheese but worth watching for the perfect technique. Delivery very quick as always. thanks (Posted on )
  27. What a bit of kitReview by
Again great service from Hennie with delivery next day. Thanks. In relation to the Sharpmaker I have spent the last 2 days sharpening everything in my house that holds an edge, it really is a great bit of kit. Most impressed with the edge it put on my Spyderco Harpy. I used this knife every day for nearly a year cutting various things like boxes etc, and it had lost it's edge BIG time. I was skeptical about the Sharpmakers ability to sharpen a serrated hawkbill blade but after 5 minutes work on the 'maker it was like a razor again. HIGHLY HIGHLY recomended, and that's after owning a number of different sharpeners over the years including a far more expensive diamond encrusted traditional steel. Many thanks once again. compact good quality i use wet and dry sandpaper to remove glase from rods keep them clean. tip that i use if the knife you want to sharpen has a bad bevel i lie a corse hand stone on the sharpmaker rod alternate sides till i get a true bevel then go through the steps 1 to 4 with sharpmaker tested for hair popin sharpness on arm omg buy one now fantastic (Posted on )
  29. TipReview by
I have had a Sharpmaker for about 15 years. I also have the new improved model. It is very important to remove the glaze from the fine rods, or you will not get the results you are looking for. Sal recommends rubbing them together in the DVD. I used sand paper on mine. You will now be able to take a brand new Spyderco folder out of the box, and make it even sharper. (Posted on )
