Spyderco Tasman Salt

Spyderco Tasman Salt

The Tasman Salt folder features a Hawkbill blade. This distinctive curved cutting tool has a claw-like tip that originated in the marine/commercial fishing industry. Cutting in and around water involves cutting line, netting and rope and it's done quickly, often at arm's length while pulling downward or toward you. The blade's arcing tip holds what you're cutting against the sharpened edge keeping it from slipping off the tip. Spyderco's new rustproof Hawkbill blade is made with state of the art non-rusting H-1 steel. H-1 is a precipitation-hardened steel containing nitrogen instead of carbon, which cannot rust. The hollow-ground blade comes PlainEdged or SpyderEdged with both configurations offering remarkable cutting performance in and around fresh and saltwater. Textured with a Volcano Grip pattern, the molded fiberglass reinforced nylon (FRN) handle is offered in black or visible marine yellow. It's equipped with a reversible left/right hand titanium pocket clip (also non-rusting) that positions the folder tip-up in the pocket. We recommend threading a thong or cord through the lanyard hole for back-up retention around water, where once dropped, a knife is often lost or irretrievable.

  1. Superb little hawkbillReview by
This reminds me a lot of the Harpy in style and cutting power: Comparing the two side-by-side, the Harpy has a somewhat thicker blade, is heavier and more 'tail biased' on the handle. Whereas the Tasman has the advantage of H1 steel, the greater grip of the FRN and is much lighter.....When fishing or foraging on the coast, my Harpy was my 'go to' knife....I suspect that the Tasman will now take that duty- especially as it's tip-up carry (my preference on small-medium Spydies) and the Harpy is tip-down only.

The edge has proved to be both scary sharp and resistant in cutting tough webbing- so I can definitely recommend- I went with the Serrated model because, well, it's the only way to enjoy a Spyderco hawkbill properly!...That said you either love or hate a hawkbill- it's useless for foodprep on a chopping board (The point will dig into the board and there's no 'belly'), but for everything else cuts like a cutting-torch flame through tissue paper.

The FRN handle is still the 'old' Volcano pattern from the mid 2000s- while superb, it's not as 'stick-to-the-hand-like-Velcro' of the newer Bi-Directional pattern...It's still good even with wet hands. I prefer the flat heel that you can ride your thumb on for downward s****ing cuts over the newer 'pointy' heel of the Delica 4 (etc)

Likewise, the clip is the older Delica 2 style- which I prefer, truth to tell. This, however, is the source of the only niggle I have: on deep cuts you can feel the clip flex under your hand pressure, which is disconcerting at first

4 out of 5- A great little hawkbill. Accept the limits of the blade shape and buy one of these instead of a Delica!

  2. Perfect for the farmReview by
I bought this knife to use around the farm. Since this involves cutting lots of man made materials I opted for serrations. The combination of serrations and blade shape make it a beast for cutting rope and twine and the point is excellent for opening bags of calf meal, silage bales and fertilizer bags. The H1 steel comes in handy as both the acid in the silage and the salts in the fertilizer usually rust steel if not wiped off immediately so I can completely neglect this knife and it hasn't rusted at all. The steel does scratch easily but this is merely aesthetic. Also the clip is excellent and fits tight onto my pocket while the knife is so light I often forget I even have it with me. (Posted on )
  3. Great knife let down by its finish.Review by
Bought this as my first Spyderco. I'm a fan of hawkbills and was looking for a stainless low maintenence knife for on the farm. Ordered Sunday night arrived Tues morning standard delivery. Perfect HH service.

Pros: Great shape blade & handle, totally rust proof, super sharp OTB, amazing jimping and very light.

Cons: Super soft steel scratches on everything, poor edge holding, riveted and closed back construction make service and cleaning difficult.

Overall I want to love this knife but the above negatives and the overall finish really let it down (i cut myself twice on the spyderhole and the blade spine there so sharp/unfinished) Also because the H1 is so soft any particle that get in near the pivot just gouge grooves in the tang.

  4. Another Great SpydieReview by
This was my second Spyderco knife and i bought it principally for Fishing and kayaking. It is very similar in size and design to the Spyderco Harpy, but with H1 Steel. I actually left my Tasman Salt in a bucket of saltwater by mistake when i first got it for a week!! No matter when i got it out after a quick rinse in fresh water it was fine. No rust at all. Great knife and with lightweight handle very easy to carry. (Posted on )
