Shadow Daburu Japanese Style Folder - Ancient Bone

Description

The Shadow Daburu Japanese Style Folder is a dual blade pocket knife based upon traditional Japanese folding knives. Aesthetically this knife looks much older than it is, very much a traditional looking knife! The ancient bone scales are nicely textured, both adding functional grip, and visual appeal.

The two blades are made of 1065 carbon steel, and both are non-locking. Both blades although different shapes, are both 5.5cm in length. This is a really nice size for an EDC knife, not too big that it’s close to the legal carry limit, and not too small that the blade has very limited uses.

In short the Shadow Daburu Folder in Ancient Bone is not only aesthetically appealing, it’s also a highly functional EDC knife!

Please note that this knife is made in China.

I like the bone scales and the simplicity of this. I find one handed opening is easy, the blades work safely and it sharpens well. The joints are open tubes, so I can put a lanyard through - so it doesn't get lost. It doesn't open in my pocket.

So far, I'm very happy with this. I do think the sharpening profile could be improved, but it is adequate as-is, and could be fixed if I was really bothered.

    Excellent value for money

Nice LOOKING knife this is, for sure, but the build quality is pretty poor: the spine of the knife is cheap stamped metal. The steel on the blade took to rust with just the humidity of pocket carry (insert joke here) so I keep it with a sheen of ballistol. As others note its lumpy in the pocket. The narrow blade is not much good for anything (maybe pencil sharpening?), the tanto-shaped blade a little better as a utility blade. Cheap and cheerful but won't have a long carry lifespan I fear. I normally only buy pocket knives for a specific reason having done lots of research, I like knives with history , that are practical and well constructed, but for some reason not yet known I purchased this little knife on a whim.
It has no history at all , the Company producing it seems to be a bit of a "fantasy" style weapons company having the rights to re produce replicas of the weapons in the Vikings TV series.
The little knife came quite sharp out of the box , its ok for the price but Im not sure quite what to do with it. Its not an EDC for me, being rather "lumpy" in the pocket, it has on 2 occasions opened when extracting it from my jeans which is a worry . Ive carried it for a few days but have now gone back to my DOUK DOUK. I suppose if you buy knives to collect, then it is different enough to be collectable but for now Its in a small leather slip in my Art box for sharpening watercolour and graphite pencils .

  4. japanese style ff style edc Review by

Now straight out if the box both blades pop hairs with no effort . The edge has kept itself shave sharp despite carrying for 5 days with daily use .
So there maybe some quality control differences from the other review.
The one pointed blade is very very pointy and I found it amazing for removing splinters and punching small holes .
The other is a higo style blade both have a hammered finish and a lovely hamon .
The tabs make opening the blades very easy with thumb on top but will not open in you pocket like some friction folders .
Now this knife I'd recommend as an edc not as a work knife or a heavy use blade due to the folded tabs on the back as they could produce hot spots and the fact it has no lock like many other friction folders your thumb becomes the resistance but great for edc use.
However I prefer this to slipjoints as if I'm holding it will never close unlike a backspring.

  5. Not Japanese quality, but serviceable for the moneyReview by

An interesting knife for sure , but remarkably blunt out of the box. In fact almost equal cutting ability between the edge and back of the blade.

It has a Hamon line on both blades, but I doubt this is real and most likely etched in for effect. At this price I wouldn't expect it to be honest, but if it is genuine I happy happy to stand corrected.

In the hand it feel quite comfortable and although crudely riveted together the blades feel pretty secure in the frame. The tabs do offer some protection against accidental closure, but if you plan on using like a lock knife or fixed blade, think twice and is is only as strong as the power in your thumb.

Back to the blades and they have a secondary bevel that is quite steep giving almost a screw drive style edge. However, given the time I have spent on one blade re profiling the edge, I think the blade will hold up well and only require minor attention to then maintain the working edge.

As a novelty knife in the style of... it is worth the pennies. Just expect a bit of work when you first get it. For me it will end up as a workshop blade more than an EDC. The SAF still wins out over this.
