  1. Great valueReview by

This truely is really great value for money, and at a low price you really can’t go far wrong with it.
The main pros for this knife are:
    - the low price
    - the traditional look
    - curved shape, stops it scratching other items in your
    pocket.
    - easy to sharpen edge style
However there are some fairly major drawbacks if you are thinking of just owning this knife and no alternative:
    - the low quality steel doesn’t hold a great edge
    - the plastic for the handles is cheap feeling
    - the fit and finish is to be greatly desired
    - the blade will come to wobble quite quickly
I don’t think this is a particularly bad knife, but it is certainly cheap. And it shows greatly.
The grind on the blade is poor and there is a pin on the lining that leaves a dent in the edge whenever you close the knife. The materials edges all have burrs which catch on the pocket but do come off over time.
All in all this would be good a knife to loose, or for messy work, it’s not something to become attached to but it does it’s job quite well and there is little to compete with at the price point.

  3. All is forgiven...Review by

A while ago I wrote a somewhat scathing review for Schrade’s yellow handled Small Sodbuster. The shield (badge) was sloppily fitted, and the edge-holding characteristics were poor, I thought. The ergonomics were nice, rounded and inviting compared to Cases’s current flat-sided Sodbuster Jr, and of course the cost was a fraction of a new Case equivalent, even a basic one (yes, they have quite a variety of this type). But in the end the yellow Schrade got only 3 stars from me.

On a whim I included this black version on an order. When it arrived I was pleased to see that the shield was crisply stamped and fitted to a much higher standard. No mini moat around the oval Imperial shield. The grind had edges that were shallow, meaning that it cut with less effort than the more steeply banked yellow model. The thickness at the edge of the blade on the black model, that is, where the grind angle of the cutting edge meets the sides of the blade, is somewhat thick, at least twice as thick as the Case equivalent, but the shallower grind angle helps to compensate for this.

Interestingly, at least for a collector, the blade of the Schrade is 2mm longer than the Case’s. The handle lengths are identical, yet Schrade has slimmed theirs by about 3mm. This slimmer feel in the hand coupled with the pleasingly rounded contours on the Schrade actually seems better to me than the more boxy feel of the Case. Older Case Sodbuster Jrs. have a more contoured handle; one can only suppose that the present slab-sided manufacture is due to less hand finishing being required. And the butt of the Case frame actually comes to a bit of a point. Not uncomfortably so, but the Schrade by comparison is gently rounded off there, too.

Maybe I was too harsh on the yellow Schrade Small Sodbuster. After all, at this price point, would a comparison to a Case really be fair, in terms of performance? Well, whether one chooses to put their pocket knife roughly through vigorous hard use throughout its life or to mollycoddle it is a personal matter.

At the end of the day, there are times when a ‘beater’ blade is preferrable to a ruined expensive knife. And whatever misgivings the yellow model gave initially, both it and its sable stablemate are certainly good value for money. And this black Small Sodbuster is actually well finished. So - all is forgiven!

Delivery from Heinnie’s was at light speed. World class service, as per usual. Cheers!

  5. Great for £8, however...Review by

On the inside of the handle where the blade goes when closed, there are two pieces of the golden coloured metal sticking out, and both have scratched the blade.

The word "IMPERIAL" stamped/engraved on the handle was full of dirt and grime.

    A little stiff to open.

Blade was reasonably sharp out of the box, didn't split paper though. Still, usable.

In short, a good knife if you aren't going to care all too much about it getting scratched and beaten up.

What a fantastic knife for £8!
Feels like a knife my dad would've used.
The handle feels quality and looks great, like ebony and brass.
The blade is firm in deployment and snaps into the open position.
    Feels great in the hand.
A perfect discrete knife that looks and feels like a quality gentleman's folder.
And of course HH delivered within 24 hours of purchase.

HH out did themselves with service as got knife within 24hrs from order, excellent as always.

Thought I'd give it a while before writing a review. Cracking knife, V sharp OTB and with a couple of quick sweeps over a strop was hair splittingly sharp! Nice firm action when opening and closing gives confidence. It looks like a classic boys pocket knife but it's an ideal tool for EDC with it's lack of intimidating character. Well done Schrade and of course well done HH on great service and speedy delivery but, that goes without saying! (Posted on )
  11. Incredible value for moneyReview by
    Rating
At sub-£8 you can't really go wrong but don't expect it to compare to more expensive EDC's. Overall a quality bit of kit which is great value for money and it feels like it's worth a lot more.

    Pros:
    -very cheap
-has a luxury feel to it

    Cons:
    -steel isn't the greatest
    -doesn't come particularly sharp
-mechanism isn't very strong so there is a slight risk it might close on your fingers

Overall, well worth the money. It's non-imposing and non-threatening which is great in an EDC. Would recommend.

I had to decrease the edge angle a bit with a stone but apart from that the knife is great, My only complaint is that there is no lanyard hole. For less than 10 quid you get a very nice looking and functional knife that doesn't look threatning. The steel is ok, it takes on a wicked edge if you decrease the edge angle like I did and it holds it ok during everyday tasks. Overall I am very impressed well done schrade. (Posted on )
  16. Don't know how you do itReview by

Having looked for a UK legal edc pocket knife for some time I finally purchased the sodbuster thinking "well it's only £7 ", well how wrong I was a very well made blade which has a sturdy non locking mechanism when open professionally finished and more than great value for money, after just a few days use would have happily paid a lot more for this blade.
So don't be like me , if you're looking at it buy it you won't be disappointed

  17. Great cheap EDCReview by
    Rating
I have this knife in black and yellow, both are in my rotation for EDC knives. Feels solid and the backspring which holds it open or closed has enough tension to hold it well. It doesn't feel like a cheap knife.

My only criticism of these knives is that when I first got my yellow one there was a slight nick in the cutting edge caused by the blade hitting a pin. It took some work to remove the nick and now I am careful to never let the knife snap closed as this reinstates the nick. Haven't had the same problem with the black one.

I would recommend this knife (in black or yellow) to anyone who wants a nice cheap little pocket knife to use and abuse. At under £8 this is a great knife... in fact stop reading these reviews and just buy the thing!

Just received this knife today and already i am very impressed with it. The finish isn't the best and the fit isn't the best with a few gaps here and there but all in all for the price it is a very strong knife and being legal in the united kingdom it is a great cheap knife for every day carry and use. So impressed I've already ordered the larger size for my tackle box.

Ps. Usual top class service, packaging and delivery from HH.

A pretty little knife that is legal in the uk. All the basics (good steel, strong construction, good ergonomics, firm slip joint with no play) are spot on at any price

True the some of the finishing touches remind you of the low cost. e.g. not very sharp until a little stropping, one scale having a gap to the liner and a minute chink in the brass liner.

But overall for this price it is a real winner.

A nice little slip joint folder, ideal for EDC. The blade is good quality steel and readily sharpens to a razor edge.

The mech holds the blade firmly in the open position with no discernable play.

Construction is brass frame with polymer scales and brass riveted. It is finished to a reasonably high standard and feels good in use. Obviously, it is for light use only as it is non-locking and cannot be dismantled for maintenance.

At a price of just under £8, you can’t go wrong with this knife.

Next day delivery from H.H. – nice!

  24. Gave it a lanyardReview by
    Rating
To update my recent review, the SOG Contractor II gave me an idea. Removed the lanyard attachment before disposal and fitted it to the Schrade Imperial Sodbuster. 2mm hole drilled into each scale. Easy.

Perfectionists might feel it detracts slightly from the classic lines but it suits my carry preference.

This would be good at four times the price. Mine has a blemish free finish. Perfect strength backspring and a generous size nail-nick for easy opening. Non-corrosive materials throughout. I particularly like the brass liners, pinning and detailing. An attractive contrast with the black scales.

Haven't carried it a lot only because I prefer a lanyard attachment but I can tell from experience this knife would not fail EDC.

  26. For the price...Review by

Ordered it on a whim as I was buying something else and it caught my eye.
When it arrived the backspring was sitting slightly proud (maybe half a mm) and with rather sharp edges, likely to catch on something in my pocket. If it had been a more expensive knife I'd probably have returned it, however I bought it to use it so a couple of minutes with the dremel to shave a little bit off the backspring has made it ok. This is why it's only 4 stars.
Other than that, it's great, the blade is sharp and it feels good in the hand. It's not too tight to open, but it's tight enough to stay closed.
I can see myself picking up another one (or more) of these to leave in the workbag etc.

Totally happy customer. For a budget knife, this is genuinely well made. Brass liners, firm spring action, tightly made joints, properly flush rivets, looks nice too. Only small drawback is that the end of the blade sits on a cross rivet when closed so I will need to insert something to stop it from damaging the blade.
As usual Heinnie service was exceptional - informative and fast. In fact the best customer service I have experienced in the UK bar none - and I teach customer service for a living!!

    Rating
A good knife for the money. It came sharp but needed a couple of minutes on a strop with some paste until it would pop hairs. No issues with the blade resting on a rivet causing it to blunt that a previous reviewer mentioned.
Only issue was that it was a bit stiff and felt a bit as if two surfaces were scraping together as you opened it. Cleaning off the grease and spending a while opening and closing and then applying some oil fixed that though.

It is definitely a nice knife for the money, but the design is a little flawed.

When the blade is closed it rests on one of the things holding the handle together (rivet?). This damages the sharp edge of the blade giving a constant nick which gets worse every time you close the knife.

Very sturdy little knife, with a good, strong frame. The blade arrived with a little chip it, but a little sharpening sorted that out. Very sharp straight from the box. Very good little knife, very good quality, well put together. It's very sturdy and feels well made, opening is a little stiff but I'm sure a bit more usage will sort that out. Factory sharpness is acceptable but still leaves something to be desired, I would recommend touching it up, it is just about shaving sharp, but it can't slice through paper on the factory edge.

All in all, very good knife, solid and well built, at an astonishing price!

Order was processed very quickly and item arrived very promptly.
It is exactly as described and does not feel like a 'cheap' knife. It has a good weight and the blade is more than acceptable for this price range. It will easily fit an EDC requirement due to the lack of a lock, but with enough strength in the backspring to give you confidence when it is put to use. The overall look is far less intimidating than even the 'legal' forms of tactical pocket knife. Very pleased buyer and would buy again.
