Would I have bought my ZT 0550 if I had this first, probably but I would have thought twice about it!

It is big, and strong and heavy, both pros and cons! However for my intended use its perfect.

This is a very impressive piece of kit for the dollar, scratch that ,this is impressive at way more money. this is built better than my Cold steel Aus 8 Lawman.

Ergonmics wise its not the greatest, but it will fold out as well as most decent frame locks once you know the knack.

It is a pry bar, very strong no blade play on mine from factory and a very good edge. No real sharpening required, although a strop won't harm.

I Like the coating but not sure if it will last as long as the knife but initial impressions are that this is really all the heavy folding knife you would ever need. Its quite big so for most a smaller version may be more appropriate but good proportions and quite comfortable in the hand.

Would get 4 stars if it was a £70 knife however as it was nowhere near this much it gets a massive 5 stars.

Heavy duty - check.

Groved scales - check.

Spear blade form, also check.

While it's heavy (very heavy) despite the angular design it sits well in the hand and the deeply-grooved scales should work well with gloves. Easily enough knife for most outdoors-y pursuits and those occassions when you din't think to pack an axe, not even a small one and the low-observable finish should also help with major cutting tasks until it wears off, possibly after being pounded on with a rock.

Seriously it is a LOT of knife for the money and better still, the price is down since I last checked it out, even if it's not so far down as the part-serrated version, maybe because the only application I can think of is sawing through mooring lines.

Thankfully that's not a high priority down our ends, so I suspect this is one of those users that will be kept to hand when costlier, shinier but only marginally superior types many times the price are doomed to sit in a drawer.

I can't remember whether I put a review on this knife or not and have been ill with a fever over the weekend, it's not showing so I must have forgotten to do it.
I received it last week, and have now got used to it.
It is a big folder and relatively heavy simply due to how robust build it is, I notice that even the retaining clip for the blade is much thicker than my other titanium schrade. The action of opening is slick once one gets used to the sheer size of the blade and seems to be loosening up as I can't resist the very satisfying click that it has when fully opened.
It was paper cutting sharp out of the box, the construction feels and looks bomb proof for a folder, it feels like a fixed blade when open. The grip is also very comfortable, I have big hands and it fits into my hand perfectly, the cut out on one side of the handle is more useful than it appears giving extra comfort and grip.
I compare this to a Gerber folder about the same size that I have which visually looks as if it has better grip as it has finger cut outs and a lot of gimping around them and some on the top of the handle, but that grip is prone to twisting in the hand, I have tried to work out why it is far inferior to this schrade and I think it is because the gimping just reduces the contact area with the hand and the top of the knife is not grippy at all, I can twist it out of my right with full grip with my left hand holding the blade, with my fingers - not good news in any situation when one needs full grip power.
Comparatively the Schrade which is £9 cheaper doesn't budge at all when twisted with the blade, it has far more grip despite the plain lines of the handle, one wouldn't lose one's grip on it in normal use, whereas the Gerber I have my doubts about, one needs to grip it very hard to avoid a potential accident and the gimping is uncomfortable, no such worries with the Shrade.
The titanium Schrade too has a very good grip despite it being slightly too small for the size of my hand and that is due to the good design.
So I think that these Schrade knives are a winning design, especially for £27. I have no hesitation in recommending this knife.
I also highly recommend Hennies who provide an excellent very professional fast and courteous service. They are my only suppliers for knives and equipment I have found them to be the best.

I have the Schrade titanium frame lock and it is an excellent knife, especially for the money - £35, so I decided to buy this one as I liked the look of it.
So far I am very pleased with it, it is quite a bit larger and heavier than the titanium which what I expected.
The opening mechanism is not as slick as the titanium, but that may be partly due to the size, it feels like one tank of a knife. I intend to try some oil on it, also there is a screw that maybe needs loosening off a little, worth a try, but it is perfectly useable as it is.
The blade was paper cutting sharp out of the box, pretty good when one considers the price and the size of the blade.
The blade is dead centre in relation to the handle, the whole knife feels very robust.
I like this design of knives with a skeleton handle to be able to easily remove any rubbish that gets in and I like the look of them.
Hennie's service was brilliant as usual, they are my only supplier for knives and gear and have been for several years now.

Far From Razor Sharp But,......Review by

Service from Heinnie Haynes? Well what more can I say that's not already been said, fantastic as usual. Order placed on a Saturday night, delivered on Tuesday. Thank you again

I bought two of there knives one plain and one partly serrated. They are a chunk of a knife, heavy, feels solid in the hand and I feel as if you could hammer a nail in with them.

The blades lock up correctly with a nice 'clunk' to the lock. There's certainly no risk of them ever closing on your fingers. If you do get it to close, no doubt you'll have done something silly to cause it. Closing the blade over is not too difficult and has a nice smooth action in both directions. The blade is nicely centred and there is a noticeable absence of lift or movement when locked.

As I said in the title, they are far from razor shaft but, it's not a big issue. I've spent an hour on both and they are now extremely sharp, although they were sharp enough for most things out of the box. I suppose like most knife owners / users I like sharpening a knife and I've sharpened far more expensive knives after unpacking them. I find it quite therapeutic although I don't know what this says about me!

To recap, great service as usual. A big solid knife with a nice solid blade (both types) and a pretty good price.

Great well made folding knife for all occasions, heavy duty yes, but to me the knife that I received I thought that the belt clip was not a very strong , it could easly slip off, but on the whole not a bad knife . I like clips that will not budge when walking or doing other activities (Posted on )

OK,SO LAST NITE THIS KNIFE AND THE WICKED EDGE,2.5 HRS, AND OK ITS NOW RAZOR SHARP. TOTALLY RENEWED SECONDARY BEVEL [DIDNT HAVE MUCH CHOICE] I MADE THE BEVEL A LOT MORE ACUTE ,WELL 20 DEGREES EACH SIDE,WHICH ISNT THAT ACUTE BUT IT IS COMPARED TO WHAT IT WAS. THIS TOOK LOADS OFF ONE SIDE AND HIT AND MISS ON THE OTHER. I DONT THINK IT WOULD GO ANY MORE ACUTE THE CUTTING EDGE WAS ROLLING BAD AS IT WAS. THROUGH ALL THE GRITS ,CERAMICS AND LEATHER/PASTE ITS GOT A GOOD EDGE, WILL SHAVE EASILY ....BUT ALL A WASTE OF TIME ANYWAY CAUSE LOCK BAR ONLY GIVE VERY SMALL LOCK UP..I COULD NOT TRUST IT , SO GAVE IT A GOOD CLEAN AND PUT IT AWAY. AS THE THE SAYING GOES ;'A SHARP KNIFE IS A SAFE KNIFE'...NOT IN THIS CASE. MAYBE I WAS UNLUCKY, I DONT KNOW,BUT YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR ...SAYING THAT I HAD THE C/S TUFF LITE AT SAME TIME AND £14 MORE .RAZOR SHARP OTB , ROCK SOLID LOCK UP AND DIDNT HAVE TO TOUCH IT[ OH , EXCEPT PUT A LANYARD ON IT] I SHOULD OF KNOWN BETTER. NOT GOING TO LEAVE A FULL REVIEW ON THIS JUST YET AS I ONLY JUST RECEIVED IT ,FIRST IMPRESSIONS THOUGH ARE NOT BRILLIANT. FIRSTLY THE KNIFE ITSELF, GOOD SIZE,LOOKS OK, DEPLOYMENT...WASNT VERY GOOD, FEELS A BIT GRITTY AND ON FIRST OPENING IT DIDNT ACTUALLY LOCK AS IF THERE WAS CRAP IN THE PIVOT STOPPING THE BLADE FULLY OPENING. THE BLADE ITSELF WASNT SHARPENED IMO BY SOME ONE WHO SHARPENS BLADES, I THINK THE CLEANER WAS STANDING IN WHILE HE/SHE WENT TOILET . SERIOUSLY THE EDGE IS ALL OVER THE PLACE ON MINE,BUT WITHOUT SLATING IT TOO MUCH THE KNIFE FEELS GOOD[TOOK CLIP OFF] AND LETS REMEMBER ONLY £27 SO IM GOING TO FIND THE KNIFE INSIDE THE KNIFE , PULL IT APART, CLEAN IT AND STICK IT ON MY WICKED EDGE T/NITE..THEN ILL LET YOU KNOW HOW GOOD IT IS. The Service:

Received my Schrade Heavy Duty Groove Spear this morning. Ordered it at 16:30 yesterday and it came through the letterbox before 9am this morning. "Standard" delivery. As soon as I pressed "confirm" on the order, an email came through saying "your order has been dispatched". It's said on almost every review but this standard of service is incomparable with any other company, in any other industry. Beyond first class. Thank you to Lauren (for this order) and all the other excellent team for their brilliant work. Please start offering customer service training for other companies, particularly a tax-dodging mobile phone provider that shall remain nameless but may or may not begin with a .

Now the knife:

Huge and heavy. Rugged is not the word for this knife, it is more like immortal!

As the previous reviewer said, it's no gentleman's folder, it's more like a sharpened crowbar!

Incredibly solid, big tough hinge. Broad, thick blade, ground to a reasonably sharp edge, which I'm sure can be improved but I haven't tried yet.

Smooth, slick action for such a big blade. No play in any direction. Two indentations in the blade above the thumb studs serve as jimping for better fine control. Opens very swiftly and positively with a little flick of the wrist.

Frame lock is super tough, cleverly designed with a ridge on the frame lock and a graduated rear of the blade to allow for wear and still provide a good lock. This can make the knife slightly sticky to unlock. However this is such a minor point, no need to deduct a star.

Pocket clip holds the blade very low down in the pocket in a tip-down position. Also more clever design; the pocket clip clips into the frame lock when opened to reinforce the lock (like it needed it).

Not the most ergonomically designed handle for extended use but this is not for whittling a spoon or toothpick., the handle is more than adequate for what you might need this knife for. Lanyard hole in the handle, which finishes to a point, serving as a "window breaker".

Handle and blade coating is tough with a nice uniform finish and no flaws.

I have read on other reviews that some people consider this knife to be too heavy to carry in a pocket. I would disagree. I find the clip is positioned high enough and is long enough to hold it well in the pocket without a problem. Maybe it's because my jeans are well supported by my fat a$$.

To summarise:

Big, heavy, super tough folder. Well made, good materials, clever design and good workmanship. Very good value considering the price. Seems virtually indestructible. If you need a big folding knife that could double as a prybar, hammer, paperweight for very large sheets of paper or a wheel chock for an errant 747 at the airport., you will love this. Value for money is excellent.

Firstly the service from HH is very good. Now the knife… I struggled to get it out the packaging, because I didn't have a knife to hand…

But now I do have a knife and what a knife it is! It's a lot larger than I expected, I read the measurements but it still didn't prepare me for the sheer size of this brutish implement. It's mass and robustness means that despite the fact the blade comes a little blunt (by my standards) out of the box you could quite happily beat anything you wanted to cut into submission first. It is sturdy and well-made, if perhaps a little too heavy. If you're looking for an elegant gentleman's knife for letter opening and cuticle care this is not the knife for you. If however you want a knife that is closer to a woodsman's axe or sledgehammer, get this one.

At first glance I thought this was a Crusader Forge knife but at 3% of the cost! A big HEAVY folder that feels reassuring in the hand. I own a couple of expensive Strider and Tarani Knives but the problem for me is that I don't want to use them in case I damage them! With this I can use and abuse and not worry about it breaking or being lost. No, it's not made out of CPM S30V and titanium but for the stuff I'm going to be using it for 99% of the time, it is more than adequate. For 25 quid I doubt you'll find a better knife. You know what? I might just get another one... bargain of the year.
Oh, lets not forget the amazing service from HH!!

I received my Shrade this morning and what a knife. 267g in weight making this one my heaviest folders so far. Mine had the smallest of nicks in the blade and rather then ask for a replacement I carefully removed it, at least I got a good indication of the quality of the blade steel which appears to be quite similar to 440C. I'd have to say I'm very happy with my purchase yet again. HH is the place to buy from in the UK no doubt about it :) (Posted on )
