Hultafors Craftsmans Orange Carbon

Hultafors Craftsmans Orange Carbon

Knife developed and adapted to suit the needs of craftsmen, manufactured in Japanese knife steel. A unique method for attaching the sheath around a button on your work clothes means it does not loosen, but is easy to remove. The knife blade is manufactured in 2.5 mm carbon steel that has been hardened to 58-60 HRC. The cutting edge has been sharpened in several stages with a final honing on a leather strop. The handle and sheath are made of extra durable PP plastic. The sheath fits just as well on your belt as on your buttons.

  1. BargainReview by
A good, practical work knife,92mm.blade,2.5mm.thick. The safety knife is the same as this with the point rounded off & 88mm.long; width is approx.2omm. Tougher than a budget Mora but not as pretty! If you cut off the handle with a hacksaw you can make a very nice stacked handle as a bushcraft or a Puukko.Even the sheath can be made more than just serviceable!A bargain - buy one (or more). 2. Quiet quality... at a terrific bargain!Review by
This is the first Hultafors I ever bought. The brand was recommended by a leather craftsman and I know he is both skilled and knowledgable! So when I wanted one for use in a traveling bag, one I could just leave and not worry about, this one fit the bill. It’s not too big, and the high visibility orange handle is a good feature. The plastic sheath seems safe and secure.

Ordinarily a Mora would have been my choice but the pedigree, easily maintained Scandi grind, and quality carbon steel blade of the Hultafors made this one a worthy candidate. The wonderfully reasonable price was just the icing on the cake!

So it hasn’t had much use, but the previously mentioned conversation, comparing the virtues of Mora vs Hultafors, although it was a brief conversation, certainly made me willing to give them a try, seeing that the opinion came from an expert.

This is a stellar bargain for a genuine Scandinavian made blade, with a thoughtfully designed sheath too. Well impressed.

Fantastic delivery as always from HH! Cheers!

  4. Incredible ValueReview by
These things are great. I've got at least 4 of them, and I always seem to come away with another every time I buy from here. They are such amazing value, it's hard not to pick one up when passing through.
The steel is pretty great. Haven't had any real issues with chips or rolls, and have dropped it onto concrete plenty of times with minimal damage. It is a carbon steel, and it will rust pretty quickly if put away wet, but so far it's only ever been surface rust. My most heavily used one has a grey/blue patina on the flats now, so now I don't worry about oiling it. I just make sure it's not wet when I put it away and it's fine for the most part a week later. Full scandi grind means any rust disappears when you sharpen it anyway. And at this price point, a stainless knife would have to use some inferior steel, so the steel choice is great. Comes shaving sharp out the box, which is impressive considering the steep angle geometry. Makes for a very sturdy edge, and a hard-use knife.

Grinding is decent, albeit a tiny bit uneven towards the tips. The spine is left unfinished too, so I've taken a stone to one of mine to give it a much nicer, sharper 90 degree spine for ferro rod striking.

Handle is pretty comfortable. Fills the hand nicely, with decent finger guard to stop you sliding up onto the blade. Traction isn't amazing, it's just a lightly textured plastic, but the shape of the handle itself means your hand isn't going anywhere anyways, so the light texturing is actually a positive because it reduces blisters and hotspots. It's durable too. As I've said, I've dropped it lots of times, and it has yet to shatter. I just sand out any large lumps from the small dents the concrete makes and it's good to go.

The sheath is good. It's intended for right side, tip down only. No scout carry I'm afraid. Very secure fit, and it has a little thumb ramp to make the knife easier to remove, which is always really nice to see. Drainage hole at the bottom too. I'm not too fond of the belt clipping attachment, it can be fiddly to take on and off, and I've found it works best on webbing belts that aren't to thick. That said, the fact that it actually clips to the belt itself, rather than sliding onto it means that it's really well on there, and doesn't try to slide around on your hip like belt loops do. This also improves my confidence in resheathing the knife without holding the sheath in place, something I'll normally do on other belt knives.

Overall, this knife is brillant because of one thing - the price. You lose one, who cares? Break one? Who cares! Just buy another. I've got one at work, one in the shed, one in my camping kit, and one I keep nearby to EDC around the house. I've given them out as gifts to friends, family and colleagues. And that is why they're so good. Just buy one, it's the price of a cup of coffee, and instead of an hour long caffeine high, you'll have a tool that could last a lifetime.

  5. Cheap enough to useReview by
I'm not one to use more expensive knives. Mora and hultafors are my go to tools.
For the price I'm not afraid to use this knife for any task, or take out with me on hikes. What's the worst thing that could happen? I lose £4?
Great for practical tasks and great for honing sharpening skills in the field.
I can totally understand how great it is for scouts and the like. Basically you get 4 knives for the price of one (very well priced) Swiss army hiker.

  6. A little gemReview by
For the price, this knife is well made sits in the hand comfortably, clamps inits sheath safetly and is sharp, perfect for a multitude of applications, 5*. (Posted on )
  7. Good price, very blunt.Review by
I read great things about this, people comparing it to Mora etc. And it's a sturdy thing, comfy in the hand and the sheath is more than should be expected for a fiver.

I bought it to put in my survival bag, the orange handle and thick blade make it ideal.

The blade though! Not sure if I got a dud but my butter knife has a better edge to it. The grind isn't great rather, I'll have to put some work in on this one, but once done it'll be a lifesaver.

    Great delivery from HH again.

  10. Perfect BushcrafterReview by
Great budget, bushcraft blade. Sharp, thin blade that is great for slicing through wood. It will baton through wood with a small diameter. The steel is carbon and sharpens easily; it holds an edge; the handle is comfortable; and it's only four pounds to purchase. Great value and does it's job perfectly. (Posted on )
  11. BargainReview by
Had this knife for a year now and it's still an incredible knife. It's showing it's age and then some but It's been well used and abused in the time I've had it, yet it still goes strong. For just shy of £4 I'd recommend these all day long. (Posted on )
  12. Amazing for the moneyReview by
Great little knives. Really well built, hold an edge very well and an acceptable sheath. Not sure how they make them at this price (I think the steel is Japanese SK-5) but an absolute bargin. Blades do stain (as carbon) but I'm growing to appreciate a patina :).
Well worth the money - I tend to get one as a top up for the free delivery.

  13. Total success!Review by
I ordered a batch of these and the safety knives for working with Cubs and they are brilliant. They absolutely loved them. Robust, sharp & survived horrendous conditions. Excellent! (Posted on )
  14. Great value for moneyReview by
Came with perfect zero grind, razor sharp. Sheath holds the knife securely with a snap. I have many good quality scandi style knives but use this one the most. (Posted on )
  15. Value for money.Review by
I didn't expect much for under a fiver, but I was wrong. This is a lovely knife, feels nice in the hand, carbon steel blade comes very sharp. The sheath is robust and secure. I would recommend buying this knife. (Posted on )
  16. Good bladeReview by
I got this for work because it was cheap and I knew it would take a beating. It has cut countless bits of para chord, cArved loads of bits of wood, sparked my fire steel, panassed salmon, butchered rabbits and been used to open packets of food etc. it's a great blade for the money! I did manage to damage the sheath though. It has a ridge inside to hold it in place. I managed to fold over the ridge so the retention is not as good as it was. I have had to sharpen it of corse and now that I have got rid of the ribbing on the blade from when it was made it's now more than sharp enough for any job I want it to do. It's less than a fiver. Buy one! (Posted on )
  17. Can't fault it for the price!Review by
I can only repeat what others have said before. Amazing knife for the price of a cheap lanyard bead! Super sharp, comfortable handle in bright orange (stop me loosing it outside) and nice secure fitting sheath. And the usual Heinnie Haynes amazing delivery service. (Posted on )
  18. Unbeatable value for money Review by
    Came through super fast!

Was not expecting much from this going by the price, but wanted something for the tool box.

Very good build quality, and came with a razor sharp edge. ......this has made me want to try the rest of their range.!

  19. Ideal for scoutsReview by
We've bought 42 of these for our scout troop, (sorry Bear but yours is too expensive).
They are the perfect knife to learn with. Good size blade and easy to sharpen.
True it's not the best as holding an edge. But the scouts learn to sharpen them too ( or I have to sharpen them all). Either way it's easy to get back to a razors edge and at the price you can't go wrong.

As an aside all the leaders in the troop have the HD model. Even better.

  20. Good valueReview by
Ordered yesterday afternoon, arrived this morning, from GB to Ireland. HH supernaturally efficient as usual. Knife will be reviewed after use, but initial impressions are as follows: Sheath is surprising quality and well-designed, knife is friction fit but cannot be shaken out yet is easy to withdraw, very clever. Edge is shaving sharp. Handle big, comfy and nicely hi-vis. Pocket money price might make it seem too good to be true, but on first examination I honestly can't fault it. (Posted on )
  21. What a bargainReview by
Read review that said this was not sharp. Had to check that out and have slight cut on thumb and hairless patch on arm that makes me think it is very sharp OTB. Finish along top of blade a bit rough but for the price who cares. I have had a few items now from HH and as many have said the service is second to non. (Posted on )
  22. Super Value for Money !Review by
For less than a fiver this knife really is very good.

Very pleased, and as always top service from HH!

  23. Not very impressedReview by
Don't get me wrong, it's a really good knife for under ú6, but mine did not come razor sharp (my Mora Companion did) and even after having used the Companion a good few times, my Companion was sharper than this was OTB.

The other thing I was disappointed in was this seemed to lose it's edge a lot quicker than expected. I don't think this would last a weekend, (the edge I mean, not that the blade would crumble) ,based on my first trial session. The Mora Companion on the other hand I feel would last forever.

The only reason it get's 4 stars is due to it's price.

  24. Very good!Review by
This is a very good knife indeed. Came very sharp OTB although I have to say not as sharp my Mora Companion and even after having used the Mora, the Mora is still sharper than this new.

But for the price, it's a steal, hence the 5 stars. Very comfortable grip on the handle, good sheath, for under ú6, what more could you ask for.

This knife is incredible! Razor sharp, ridiculously comfy and it just feels right! This is every bit as good as a Mora knife but at nearly half the price!

  29. Very Nice for the priceReview by
Very nice little fixed blade for the price. Came shaving sharp and ready to go.

Hi-Viz orange handle makes it easy to locate if you put it down, only downside with it was the sheath but then again at this price who can complain, great service from HH again :)
