Description

The first Higonokami knives were made as early as 1896 in the Japanese town of Miki. After the last samurai were forbidden to carry swords in public, many blacksmiths started to make knives. Higo no Kami was then an honorary title for especially powerful samurai, and it quickly became the name for the knives produced there.

Since the production in the Japanese town of Miki the classic Higonokami has hardly changed.

The Higonokami Hoseki Damascus is a lovely example of the knifemaker's art. The handle is made of one piece of folded metal, the knife is opened by a lever (Chikiri) on the back of the blade. By pressing the lever while holding the knife, the blade is kept open

A little confused about this knife's provenance - HH 's website shows the maker as Nagao Higonokami, but it arrives in a box printed with Boker 's details and no other information as to its origins (unless the large Japanese characters on the top of the box, which are a reproduction of those stamped on the knife handle, contain that information).

Anyway, I wrote to Boker who replied informing me that they source these knives "from a supplier in Japan", which, although that doesn't tell me where or by whom they are actually made, is at least an indicator that they're the real Japanese article.

But on to the knife itself - really pleased. A simple but perfectly crafted little pocket user. The friction joint has just the right amount of stiffness (I'm told that if it gets too loose you just hit the pivot rivet head with a hammer), the blade came sharp and easily sharpened further on the strop, the sexy Damascus steel a luxurious bonus.

Made to a much higher standard than the blue paper steel higo I ordered a few months ago, beautiful to look at, much better f&f and 'factory edge' and 13 pounds cheaper thant the BPS higo. All of these knives are fantastic at whittling. (Posted on )

A little piece of genuine Japanese craftsmanship in your pocket, what's not to love!? Ok, the blade isn't super sharp out of the box, it isn't stainless and it isn't highly polished, but the charm of this little legal-carry knife is way more than its price would suggest. The layers of Damascus steel are distinct and display prettily on the blade. It's very sturdy, with no play and whilst it's riveted and cannot therefore be tightened by screw if it becomes loose over time, a light tap with a hammer is the approved method to tighten it right back up again for years more service. Sharpening it is easy enough for most enthusiasts. Polishing it up and lacquering the brass might be fun to make it look even more classy, but just as a simple, sturdy, effective EDC, I can't think of anything nicer to own - certainly not close to this price-point. This is the most precise traditional higonokami I have received and I own a few , grind lines are spot on and even the chikiri (lever) is nicely finished. It arrived with a zero grind with no micro bevel and was sharp enough to use but not shaving sharp, a little time on my fine water stones and a strop and it's hair popping sharp. The blade is the usual san mai construction with the damask supporting japanese cobolt steel which is extremely hard and holds a lasting edge it will chip if you are stupid whith it so dont try smacking it through hard material use it as a pocket knife. The price is unbelievable this is a hand forged damascus knife made by a Japanese master smith we usually have to pay 400 quid for something of this quality made in the states. To top it off it's UK legal so get your orders in while Heinnie can still get them. (Posted on )

They don't usually arrive very sharp ,although the one in the photo looks pretty well sharpened. You will need a set of japanese water stones to properly sharpen one they should be zero ground with a slight convex. Ceramic or diamond stones will cause micro chipping on the edge any of the sharpening systems will not work well on it .Mine are the sharpest things in my collection once sharpened properly they only need regular stropping. If you are not sure I would recommend phoning Heinnie and talking to Nick or Richard they are great guy's and will give you honest advice , finally I would highly recomend one they are a gift at this price.
