Gerber Lightweight L.S.T.

Gerber Lightweight L.S.T.

Gerber Lightweight LST

Now here's a knife with some mighty impressive roots. It was brought to market back in 1980 by none other than the man whose last name goes on each of our products. Pete Gerber was the first knife creator to envision the merits of using all-synthetic materials in the handle. He and knife designer Blackie Collins aimed to deliver lightweight performance that had not been seen before in a knife this all-out rugged. The Gerber Lightweight  L.S.T. is the smoothest of operators. With a mechanical action that just feels good and satisfying when you open and close the blade, which happens to be made of 400 series stainless steel. But lets get back to the topic of lightweight performance. The heaviest of the four legendary L.S.T. models musters a mere 1.2 ounces on the scales. Yet, when you feel that easy grip, there's no question that Pete Gerber's big idea is one for the ages.

I've had one of these for twenty years. The action is so smooth and it weighs nothing. It's a small blade, suitable for those light duty everyday tasks. Steel quality is hardly an issue, when you're cutting string, opening parcels and paring apples, is it? It takes an edge perfectly well- but you may have to re-sharpen it a little more often than an expensive blade. Is that a surprise? (Posted on )
  2. Congratulations! It’s a baby Gerber!Review by
This really is tiny, right on the edge (ha) of being useful. But it really works well! The blade moves smoothly and positively into place, and the lock is nice and firm. You almost wish such a small pocket knife would be ok for EDC but of course it is a lock knife, to be carried in public only ‘with good reason,’ so it stays contentedly at home and is called on to sort little tasks around the house.

You expect a minuscule knife with a plastic handle to be made in China these days, so it is a bit of a surprise that it is actually made in Portland, Oregon. Interesting that it’s an original Gerber design from the 1980’s that is still in production in America. For whatever reason, its manufacture has not been delegated overseas.

It’s small, it’s sharp, and it keeps a decent edge, at least for the jobs given it so far. A bit too small for food prep or whittling in my opinion, but for other things it’s great. Very light in the pocket too.

Well used and well liked, this little Gerber baby deserves a gentle pat on the back! Cheers!

  3. Nice knife, bad grind.Review by
Nice little knife perfect for your keyring, however, the grind is uneven and the knife is almost blunt out of the box. The lock up feels strong and the knife is comfortable in hand.

Good little knife let down by the edge quality.

  4. Concerns Review by
A nice little knife but I was surprised at the coarseness of the sharpening . I would have expected more subtlety in such a tiny knife.
The pivot pin doesn't inspire much confidence either, looking under engineered just where you'd hope for the opposite., The blade locking mechanism is very good so opening and closing the knife is very slick. I just hope it isn't this very positive locking mechanism that is being relied upon to prevent the blade from wearing loose when lateral pressure is applied , for instance, when peeling an orange .
One of the earlier reviewers says that it's not a knife to show off but I think it would be if my concerns are unfounded.

I spotted this knife on here and thought I'd put in my two cents.

I've owned an earlier version of this for well over 15 years now. I'm an avid knife collector and own a few different blades, but this was my very first and it's always near by! It's had a hard life and looks surprisingly good considering; this isn't a knife to show off and be proud of, but it's always there to put a notch in you bow drill hearth or do anything else you need.

I find it keeps an edge very well too; still shaved after a days worth of campsite carving.

A great, cheap knife that over time has become a trusty old friend!

  6. Gerber Ultralight LSTReview by
Lovely little knife. Very solid lock, nice handle with a good grip and a quality steel blade. Great for any toolbox, emergency kit or camping kit. A bargain for the price too. (Posted on )
