  1. The Blade Makes itReview by

I picked this up after reading a really good article in an American magazine about the practicalities of using a big Wharncliffe blade shape for hard use tasks. They were specifically extolling the virtues of the BlackHawk BeWharned and that’s the knife I was originally after, however £35 less for a similar blade much better (in my opinion) steel seemed like a no brainer, what’s the catch? The catch in this case will be the handle, liner-less FRN that, to be blunt, is a bit cheesey. The moulding of the texturing on my example was a little off in places and there is a very slight but noticeable flex in the handles, not enough to really worry about but certainly there (the flex in the scales causes a tiny bit of side to side blade play but otherwise the lockup is good and tight). While we’re talking handle, the pocket clip looks rather cheap too. I say this really to set expectations because other than the disappointing handle construction this is really quite a nice knife.

The pictures don’t show it too well but the curve in the handle is quite pronounced which although a bit funky at first is quite comfortable and allows a practical edge presentation to any work to be cut which in this case shows off the advantages of a straight blade well, almost gives off a whiff of Karambit in the hand with four fingers back on the handle (and a positively Karambit like aura when held in a reverse grip) which I guess comes from its ‘tactical’ nature. Choking up on the forward choil gives a nice level of control for what is really quite a deceptively large blade with a well-positioned thumb ramp with good jimping on the blade. Speaking of blade, the actual blade itself is a treat, the nicely proportioned, aggressive swedge at the front leads to a very pointy tip and just looks great. The blade came nicely sharp from the factory (Fox Italy always do a great job of making them sharp, nice to see their US made blades carry that on). 154CM I find always takes a great edge and after a touch up you’re left with a 3.5-inch scalpel with a wicked keen edge.

I was toying between 3 and 4 stars for this knife, the handle and clip are a disappointment but the blade itself is a nice shape, well ground and in a good steel. I guess in order to hit the price point for the knife they had to make some concessions and chose to put the cost up at the sharp end which if you treat this knife as a user then it’s hard to disagree with that logic.

  2. Serious WharncliffeReview by

The Spyderco Yojimbo and Blackhawk BeWharned now have a serious competitor, in the new "naughty aggressive looking modified Wharncliffe" category.
The Drago is Very sharp and ultra pointy out of the box, the lockup is good with excellent build quality. Designer is Mike Vellekamp and he's created a great knife at a good price.

  3. Nice blade....but.....Review by

The blade on this is cracking, & the ergo's are nice. I just can't help feeling that the knifes scales feel really cheap though. They're the same material as my ú5 rough rider folder, which just doesn't cut the mustard on a ú70 knife! G10 would have been MUCH nicer. (Posted on )
