Doan Machinery Fire Starting Tool

Doan Machinery Fire Starting Tool

By scraping the "shaving edges" of the Doan Machinery Fire Starting Tool with a blade, you will accumulate a pile of magnesium shavings.

Then simply scrape the "sparking insert" to ignite the shavings to temperatures of 5400°F/2982°C, hot enough to light even the most stubborn campfire! It's size makes it convenient for pocket or tackle box.

  2. When you need a really hot burn ... use this!Review by
Bought as part of my first order here and very pleased with the Doan Mag block.

In the past I purchased a mag block from a camping store that turned out to be utterly useless, sure the striker worked but the 'magnesium' was nothing more than std aluminium and would not ignite even with a blow torch!

This DOAN manufactured 'real-deal' Magnesium fire starter is excellent.
I found it easy to shave off some small pieces and also create fine powder just by altering the blade angle whilst shaving the back edge of the block.

A small amount of the mag particles and shavings under a few wispy strips of paper and some feathered fat-wood and boy that thing just went up like a bonfire after the first spark hit it!

The magnesium burned white hot and lasted a good few seconds, enough for me to move it around.

Conclusion; I think everyone should have at least one of these excellent mag blocks in a bag ready for use when you need that extra heat to get things going.

  3. The only time I enjoy shavingReview by
I love these old school fire starters, once you are used to how they function , shaving particles off is easy as is igniting them. Does the job it should with no issues (Posted on )
  4. Doan magnesium blockReview by
It's ok I guess for a back up, but I feel for what you get and what you spend the BCB bushcraft magnesium block is better value for your money,
much easier to use too and lasts for ever.

  5. Mag BlockReview by
This is a great way to help start your fire. I attached it to a LMF Swedish fire steel and carry both together. It's easier to scrape the block with the LMF scraper. You will need to collect a decent amount of shavings - as previously stated - it burns very quickly! It will ignite your tinder and putting the shavings in a small container, like an acorn or Limpet shell for example helps concentrate the heat in a small area.

  6. good B.O.B. kit bit!Review by
Weighs nothing, burns really hot, costs nothing, easy to scrape and strike, good design proves it doesn't need to change. (Posted on )
  7. Maybe not ?Review by
I admit, maybe I'm not good at this.

Shaving the magnesium takes ages, and the small bits burn too quickly. For what it's worth, I wouldn't buy it again.

Rather than this: a good tinder and Exotac NanoStriker XL is the way to go.

  8. Better things than thisReview by
Mag. scrapings burn too quick. Ok as a back-up firestarter but other styles are better. I took the rod off and put it in a s-kit. (Posted on )

  11. The Real Deal, at a Proper price!Review by
The actual authentic USAF aircrew genuine issue firestarter product, as issued to all US Navy and USAF aviators in their aircrew survival kits. Also issued too to many US land forces personnel as a highly reliable and dependable basic emergency firestarter. Sold here at a much better lower price than the old Hi Gear import price being retailed in big name UK high street camping stores! (Posted on )
