CRKT Offbeat

CRKT Offbeat

A far cry from familiar. During his impressively long career, designer Pat Crawford has earned himself a handful of illustrious awards. And throughout it all, one unique knife has stood the test of time: the Offbeat™. Originally designed in 1979, Pat has honed and refined this out-of-the-ordinary pocket knife to perfection. This is ingenuity at its finest.

For anyone that considers themselves a part of the knife community, Pat Crawford is a household name. From his shop in West Memphis, Arkansas, he’s turned out customs that have set a seriously high precedent. That’s not to mention that they’re consistently some of the most popular at CRKT®. Now, he’s back at it with a design from the archives: the Offbeat™.

Before the CNC machine revolutionized the industry, Pat spent an inordinate amount of time cutting handles out of titanium and fitting folders together by hand. So, to expedite the process, he simplified his design. Inspired by a Boy Scout wire handle folder, he invented the Crawford Lockback—an innovation that has proven its worth and is the defining characteristic of the incredibly unique Offbeat™.

The handle is made of stainless steel and features a long, slender cutout along the back with a solid thumb stud at its terminus. As the blade is deployed with its own ambidextrous thumb stud, the cutout slides around the butt end of the blade until it reaches a notch along the backside. Then, the cutout seats snugly into place, effectively locking the blade in the open position. In this position, the harder you grip the handles, the more secure it becomes.

To disengage the Crawford Lockback and close the knife, push up on the thumb stud near the pivot area of the blade and fold it closed—a truly ‘offbeat’ way to unlock a folder. The classic drop point blade features a satin finish, matching the handles, and making for one sleek, sender everyday carry.

Conventional? Nope. Utilitarian? All the way.

  1. Understated Simplicity and EleganceReview by
Pat Crawford's 1979 design for this Offbeat folder is simply stunning. The stainless handle, spine and lock appear to be machined from one piece of metal (looking through the handles to the underside of the spring shows the only milled pattern in the metal), since there are no rivets or screws visible on the knife at all, apart from the removable 3 clip screws.

The only hint of two separate liners can be seen through the lanyard hole, and three very faint circular rivets around the spine at the back of the knife. But the beautiful satin finish on the steel handles makes these flush circles almost completely invisible.

The tapered hollow grind on the gently curved (and very sharp) blade is sublime, and the lockback feature is simple and very effective.

Since the lock bar doesn't act like a spring on this knife, opening the blade with one thumb is a simple but deliberate action, as the lock pushing on the back of the blade is a little stiff. Unlocking this slim beauty is another matter. I can break the lock arm back with my thumb and first finger, but I need a finger from the other hand to push the blade back in. Definitely a two handed job. But I like the knife so much, I don't mind the complications of the opening and closing.

I also have the amazing CRKT Flatout, which is heavier, more expensive, and has a cool spring opening. The two knives are very similar in length and width. But of the two, I prefer the Offbeat - even though it's basically a more finicky knife to open and close. But I am so enchanted by the ingenious way this knife has been made, that it goes in my pocket before any other knife does.

In the UK this knife is not legal carry; the blade locks and is over 3" long. What the hell. I'll put it in my boot and nobody will ever see it. Seriously, this is a knife you will want to own, to play with and wonder at. Even if you have to do it in the comfort of your own home. Five Stars, no question.

Lastly, at £37 this beautiful knife is just a steel steal, and it's made so well that I would have paid twice that amount, for what has instantly become one of my favourite knives. Thank you, Julie for such a reliable, less-than-24-hours turnaround. Great knife, great service as always from Heinnie Haynes.
