CRKT Obake

CRKT Obake

The CRKT Obake is a tactically inspired everyday carry knife with a uniquely etched blade and cord wrapped ray-skin style handle is the true epitome of great design.

Designed by Lucas Burnley of Albuquerque, NM, the Obake™ is an artful combination of a classical knife style built with modern-day materials and techniques. It's another example of Burnley's belief that knives are a personal expression of independence. And this one makes a statement when you bring it out for action.

A throwback to a classic Japanese Kwaiken design, it features a full tang fixed blade with a unique gray titanium nitride finish that's acid-etched to give each knife a distinct look. It's like he made the blade exclusively for you to throw down when the need for utility comes up.

The handle has a Katana style nylon cord wrap over a black faux ray-skin for an exceptional and secure all-weather grip. When storms are brewing, you'll be ready.

The sheath of the Obake™ is made from glass-reinforced nylon that provides consistent retention even in humid environments. A paracord lanyard on the sheath is designed to attach to your belt loop and keep the sheath in place when you deploy the knife. A skull bead adds a not-so-subtle accent to the paracord lanyard.

  3. Good value for they moneyReview by
After doing a fair bit of online research, I decided that this was just what I'm looking for. I have started collecting again, and wanted a knife built along the lines of the traditional Japanese Kaiken dagger. As far as quality and sharpness are concerned, it's just what I expected. Namely extremely good value for money! I ordered it on a Monday afternoon, and it was delivered late Friday morning. Very quick dispatching by HH - I live in a Mediterranean country, and was not expecting it to arrive so soon. All in all, one very satisfied customer. (Posted on )
  4. Its all been said!Review by
The previous reviews have said most of what I think, I can certainly validate all of those points.

Grips very well! Corded grip is excellent.
Sharpens up very nicely, I even shaved with it last week though I would recommend staying with a proper razor, I was proving a point to a friend.
Very nice discreet sheath. CRKT recommend that the sheath be tucked into the waistband with the paracord looped on your belt, thus drawing the knife pulls the sheath out of the belt before the knife leaves the sheath, no cuts or loose sheaths!
Acid etching looks awsome, can't exaggerate that!

  5. Kept simple.Review by
The CRKT Obake is a great c*L carry knife (when I’m at work) and really well made. For £30 I’d highly recommend it for Military and maybe some police use. Why it’s £10 cheaper than the smaller version is strange though. I’ve used mine in all weather scenarios and it’s never shown any sign of rust. A quick strop after use keeps it razor sharp. 6. Great knifeReview by
Love this knife. Had my eye on it for ages, and since it dropped down to £30, I couldn't resist. I'm glad I did, this knife is great.

Steel is decent for the price point, can't complain. Haven't used it extensively, but it came sharp enough, sharpens up nicely, and stays sharp. It is of course a budget-oriented Chinese steel, but for £30, I wouldn't expect a super steel. An alternative in something like D2 or 0-1 would have been awesome, but hey. You get what you pay for. No complaints.

The handle is great. Excellent traction, when wet or dry, and looks really nice. At first I was skeptical at the idea of a cord wrap being resin impregnated, but it's great. Gives it excellent sheath retention. It's hard-wearing, good at reducing dirt-build up you'd expect out of a cord wrap. Love the idea of a very good looking, traditional aesthetic, but with a modern, functional twist. Faux rayskin looks gorgeous, and the whole Japanese aesthetic of this knife is great. Glad it was fake rayskin, I can't help but think that many exotic leathers like this are unethical, but no worries with this one.

The sheath is really solid. Retention is superb, one of the most secure knives I own. It's durable too, and has a drainage hole at the bottom, which is always nice to see. I've tried both the inside-waistband and belt carry approaches, and personally, I prefer to use it in a 'scout' style at the front of my belt. Very comfortable, easy access. I found the system Burnley recommends where you tuck it in your waistband and pull it out when needed to be somewhat inconvenient for resheathing, so belt carry suits better for my utility/EDC needs. Both are viable options, and I will continue to use both as and when I feel like it. Neck carry isn't really an option. For me, this knife is too long, thick and heavy for a neck knife, coming from someone who has carried a CRKT Minimalist as often as possible for two years. There are lighter, slimmer alternatives, and the extremely contoured handle can be uncomfortable when worn against the chest. I would have liked to see the option to carry it in a vertical position on the belt, something which the attachable belt loop doesn't allow. One more eyelet on the other side of the sheath wouldn't have gone amiss, and it might allow for more options like lashing it to webbing etc. A slight thumb ramp on the top edge might have been a nice addition too, but it works OK without one.

One of my favourite aspects of the design is the acid etching on the blade. It's gorgeous. I can't help but keep looking at it. It also improves corrosion resistance, which is a great plus. One thing worth bearing in mind is that it will inevitably increase friction, because of the texturing, which is a slight downside, and can be noticeable in some cutting tasks like cardboard. To me, the looks outweigh this downside easily, because this is not really a hard use utility knife. It's more of a decorative, lighter use piece. And I'd hate to scratch up this beauty anyway.

For me, there is one burning question - 'who is this knife really for?'. Burnley designed it as a self-defence knife, but since laws prohibit this in the UK, that use case goes out the window. Fixed blades aren't legal UK EDC, and it's not really suitable for a work knife or camping knife. It makes a decent lighter use knife, for opening packages and the like, and I have used it in the garden for cutting weeds and pruning small branches. But really, it doesn't truly excel at any of these. I love wearing it around the house for these tasks, and the blade shape is fairly useful for most tasks. But to me, most people will see this as a more decorative knife, which is one thing it does very well.

I love using it, and will continue to, but not because it's the best choice, but that it brings a smile to my face every time I pull it out. And at the end of the day, that's one of the most important things a knife collector can hope for. I love it, and will continue to for years to come.

As per usual, excellent service from Heinnie Haynes. Will continue to purchase from this site, even if my wallet hates me for it. :)

  7. Awesome bladeReview by
Love the style of blade and owned the koshi so had to buy it's bigger brother. Mine didn't come with resin impregnated cord and was a little loose. But I know how to resin impregnate and sorted it within the hour. Great service from heinnies as usual. Only dilemma is I want another one of each. Lol. (Posted on )
  8. Invaluable yet stylish Review by
I work in a very wet environment where a good knife grip is essential, the grip of the Obake is outstanding!

Rain, storm, pitching boat this grip holds firm even in a gloved hand. The blade is sharp (often reviews complain of dull edges)

Aesthetically pleasing in and out of the sheath
I look forward to buying the shorter accompanying blade!

This is quality, love it! It has a genuine traditional Japanese feel about it but without the price tag you normally see attached to hand made Japanese w*. Ok, I know I'm not comparing like for like, you get what you pay for, but CRKT have done an excellent job with the Obake, I would like to see more like it, only BIGGER! (Posted on )
