Cold Steel Trail Hawk

Cold Steel Trail Hawk

Modelled after an early frontier pattern, the Cold Steel Trail Hawk can do it all. It's an excellent chopper and has a functional hammer poll with a hardened face so you can drives nails, hammer in stakes, and smash or crush just about anything. 1. perfect for my packReview by
I wanted something fairly lightweight to do chopping and splitting for firewood. This fits the bill perfectly, much lighter than my hatchet.

The head no longer comes with black paint and has a patina from something like gun blue. The handle is nice and smooth and finished well. I had to sharpen it because the edge was very dull.

I take the head off and use by hand and can store this in my pack, this lets me put the handle uncut attached to my molle. I've put a small hole and lanyard on the handle to help with fixing it to my pack.

The head screw has been removed and I've worked the handle so the head fits perfectly with no wiggle at all. I can just tap the head on and off when I need to use it.

I don't know why people complain about them, they're great value for money. My axe and hatchet cost much more than this but I'm very pleased with it.

1st class service from Heinnie again.

  2. Good travel axe.Review by
Had mine a few years now, excellent service as usual from HH.
The axe may have some flaws, but these are far outweighed by its advantages. Mine arrived with good fitting head, and only required a little work to get a razor sharp working edge.

Advantages; lightweight, so it packs easy. The length of shaft, although some prefer to shorten it, it is good for extra "purchase". If you want a shorter handle, just change your grip further up the shaft. The length of the cutting edge may be small, but it is effective enough with a practised swing, for splitting and cutting larger timber than you'd expect, assisted by the curved cutting edge. Definitely worth getting a proper fitting sheath to avoid accidents while carrying. I have ground the cheeks on my axe head slightly making it much easier for shaving
/carving wood, If you carry all your gear on your back, this axe, and the CRKT Wood Chogan are well worth considering. I chose the Cold Steel for the slightly longer shaft.

  3. Myth Making Made SteelReview by
You realise your naivety when the 'Taiwan' etched into the heavily painted head appears more permanent than the sticker which proclaims 'the American tomahawk company,' The shaft of the helve is damaged in an attempt to make it fit the head and then grub screwed to make it stay in place. Of course you expected this to be something of a project but scandinavian tools have spoiled you and this item was not ' that cheap.' Then you pry off the soft clear cover to reveal no edge at all and a grind that will not be sharpened until the paint is stripped. For a little less than half the cost of a small Swedish axe this hawk is only worth the outlay for the sake of novelty or the romance of a time long past. (Posted on )
  4. Cold Steel Trail Hawk - ExcellentReview by
Hi all, I thought I'd leave a review for this excellent little Hawk, having read the previous reviews I was a little worried about its quality, but like many others I wanted something to put my own input into.
Having taken a chance and placed my order and received it the next working day as with all my orders, Top marks to Heinnie as always, it arrived well packaged and I must say the quality was much better than I expected

  5. poor quality control by cold steel.. Review by
I bought one of these as a project hawk.. however I was shocked by the quality of the axe head... plus the fit to the handle was incredibly lose and poor...
I was impressed by Heinnie's delivery as always..
I actually contacted Heinnie to mention the poor quality and was advised I could send it back for a full refund.. however I wanted to work on it as a project so I kept it...
However, if you wanted it as an "out of the box" product forget it... would have been a danger to yourself and others using it...
I have since re-finished the head and handle.. plus soaked in the handle with the head well hammered on in water for three days.. re inserted the grub screw and wedged the ax head...
Come on Cold Steel where is your quality control? Cheaply produced and poor quality..
only worth buying if you have the tools and patience to make good...

  6. Words of AdviceReview by
Firstly, I'm stunned, as always, by HH's service and delivery speed! First class.

Okay, now, a few words of advice with this item.

Not an out of the box ready to go axe. Loose head, splittery handle, etc. This is a piece of kit that you should expect a bit of work on.

Instead of buying this as a 100% ready to rock n roll 'hawk, think of it as a project 'hawk. If you see it as that, you have a 5* base to start work with. Remove the head, reshape the hickory top, and then reseat the head. You can add the little screw back, but if you've done a good job with the handle, you shouldn't need to. Sand down the hickory handle, a little oil to get it protected and nice. If you want to go for that Native American feel, a little emory on the head to remove the black coating. Sharpen up the blade if you so desire...I did.

Because it is sold (and advertised by Cold Steel) as a ready to go tomahawk, plus because of the effort required to get it into a ready to use state, it only gets 3*.

  7. Cold steel quality control???Review by
    Great delivery service from Heinnie.
The Trail Hawk however was quite a disappointment in regards to quality control.

Unwrapped the hawk and the head slipped straight off the handle hitting the floor before I could catch it.
Thought it may just be a loose fixing grub screw.
Looked at the handle to find that the grub screw was fully embedded into the haft.
The handle was ultimately ill fitting to the head.
(Come on Cold Steel, you're meant to be one of the best knife maker's worldwide)
Thought about sending it back to Heinnie for a replacement, but by the time the return/replacement would have taken place I could sort it out myself.
Had to reshape the top portion of the haft and re'seat the grub screw to get a firm fit.
Not happy about having to mess around sorting the issue because some negligent employee at Cold Steel can't judge the good from the bad.

  8. Excellent... With abit of TLCReview by
Bought this a few weeks back, right off the bat it didn't quite do it for me and the head wobbled a lot, after some hard use on my DofE camp the head soon seated nicely, when I got back I removed the set screw, stripped the paint, forced a patina, sanded the handle and stained it walnut, then I put in a lanyard tube and a nice thong lanyard and added an OD green paracord Turks head over strike protector. Then a nice convex edge finished the axe of nicely. Lastly I purchased a custom sheath from Broncho custom crafts to put the icing on the cake so to speak.
Now it's one fine tool that I am proud to have in my collection. If you want to see what this looks like ill be posting a video on my youtube channel MakingTheCut97.
As always great service from Heinnie!

  9. Decent AxeReview by
Firstly, incredible service from Heinnie; told it was out of stock, due in within 7 - 14 days, arrived the day after. Amazing.
Secondly the hawk; overall, pretty good. Good length to the handle and it's a decent bit of hickory. The head's a good weight and the feel of the tool is nice. Not too heavy but substantial enough to get the job done. The head was slightly loose when it arrived and held on by an odd grub-screw arrangement but a few minutes recarving the end of the handle sorted this out. The blade also came with an amateurish secondary bevel but this was ground out on the waterstone pretty quickly. All in all, this is a nice piece of kit and for the money you can't go wrong.
Last words to Heinnie; outstanding service.

  11. Good Hawk!Review by
Few flaws on these that Cold Steel need to put right. First, i'ts blunt out of the box. However, it is quick to sharpen, and within a few minutes you can hone it shaving sharp. Second, the heads are jammed really tight. I wanted to disassemble mine to fit in my pack, but no such luck. Those issues aside, it's a good product. Light enough so your arm does not ache quickly, but strong enough to give you some good chopping power. Tested on oak branches, 6 inch thick and was through within a minute. The hammer head is a great bonus tool, lots of uses around the camp and unlike a spike you don't risk taking out your eye when chopping. As a bonus, it throws quite well too, though I would be concerned about handle breakage if the target was missed. All in all, an excellent hawk, looses a star due to bluntness and can't take the head off! (Posted on )
