Description

Cold Steel President Lynn C Thompson has always admired the sleek lines and dependable, highly functional blade shape of the classic Puukko. Ever since their inception in 1980, this classic Finnish hunting, and utility knife has never been far from his thoughts.

Over the years, they have released numerous versions of the Puukko, and now, in a design collaboration with custom knife-maker Andrew Demko, Lynn is proud to introduce a new folding Puukko - the Finn Wolf!

Taking the classic Puukko as inspiration, Andrew Demko brought his engineering genius to a new, hard-working folding knife. Thin, super lightweight, easy to carry and even easier to use, this modern EDC (Every Day Carry) knife is perhaps the perfect "everyman" knife.

Equipped with the Tri-Ad lock, adding new levels of safety and security, the Finn Wolf is utterly impervious to shock ' making it reliable in the toughest, most uncompromising conditions.

Its satin polished Japanese AUS8A blade is ready to put in long hours and hard work, and, with its keen zero ground edge it's a breeze to re sharpen.

With this much performance packed into this comfortable, strong, practical and inexpensive a package, there's simply no excuse not to add one to your collection today!

I bought one of these knives recommended to me buy a friend a great little pocket knife, i am very happy with it apart from the low grade locking.
Its such a shame they cut the corners on the last but most important part.
Lets hope they re engineer the locking to a better standard

I really wanted to love this knife. In theory it's perfect: an affordable scandi folder. In general it is good and cuts well. It's also pretty robust - it looks like it can take a beating.

However, it comes with a couple of caveats that have made me look quite unfavourably on it.

    1. The lockback is ridiculously stiff. To the point where you can't close the blade. I thought that after a few days use and working on the lock it would loosen up but no, still sticking almost every time. I remedied this by removing the blade and filing off about 1mm of the hook/lock section. The blade now closes every time, but it's still annoyingly stiff (though will probably loosen up over time).

    2. The thumb studs are uncomfortable. To compensate one could loosen the pivot bolt, but this allows the blade to wiggle/play - annoying.

    3. Third and most importantly, I'm not entirely sure how good this blade is or how well it holds an edge. When I received it I wanted it slightly sharper so stropped it until I was happy. This seemed to take forever, at least ten minutes on each side. By comparison I then stropped my Benchmade Griptilian twenty times on each side and it's now sharper than I've been able to make the Finn Wolf. One could argue that the steel on the Griptilian is superior, but it's still a sticking point.

All in all, I hate to say that this knife is not worth £50. For less money it'd be an amazing beater/every day knife (I'm using is for various use around a farm, for which it's well suited), but as it stands I'm pretty disappointed. I will continue to use it in the hope that it grows on me and also to really see how the blade holds up, but I'll be keeping an eye out for other similarly priced scandi folders.

Hope this review is of some use.

  4. Make sure you get a fixed grind modelReview by

I bought one of these last year and although the knife is incredible, the scandic grind is too acute for hard use and as expected the edge rolled AND chipped with mediocre use. I returned to heinnie and they did a full refund.

Cold Steel have acknowledged the issue and issued a statement saying they have adjusted the grind angle for a more suitable edge under hard use. As for know I am putting off re-buying one until heinnie acknowledge they have the fixed model. Be sure to ask them before you purchase, save you the hassle I went through.

I had been eyeing up the new cold steel Finn wolf for a while. It is literally the perfect knife for my outdoor needs, with a 3.5 inch blade, Scandi grind and being able to fold away and be popped into a pocket means I can take it on a dog walk and practice some woodwork or fire lighting skills without scaring a poor old lady by having a knife on my belt. 6. Devours wood, yet chipsReview by

The pros: good size blade, exceptionally sharp, absolutely eats wood. The lock is truly exceptional, absolutely rock solid.

The cons: the end of the grip has a sharp 'return' that digs painfully into your hand if you use a reverse grip - I had been planning to smooth it off with a file until today when, whilst trimming bark off a thumb thick silver birch stick the blade chipped! Not a small chip too. Very surprised, in years of knife ownership I have never had anything like this happen- I wouldn't even trust this knife to sharpen a crayon now.... Such a shame as (the handle design apart) I was really enjoying this knife.

A little internet research has now revealed to me that this is a common problem with the Finn Wolf. It is rumoured that Cold Steel have sorted the problem out with later batches of the knife- perhaps I have an early example.

Knife arrived from HH well packaged and in the expected timescales but I was surprised to find it not in a box but in a tough plastic retail display case. This is my first Cold Steel folder that has arrived in such packaging and for my collection I would have preferred a box. This is not really a big deal but perhaps HH can feedback to Cold Steel as some other collectors may not like it.

Because the knife is supplied open in the revised packaging you will have to be pretty careful getting it out and the first thing you will try to do is try to close it. The lock up on this knife is proper decent and required a heap of effort to deploy the thumb press to close it. The knife on face value is quite plain and very light and there is no play in the blade at all.

As for the blade, it is pretty damn hair shaving sharp and I have found it will fit my needs perfectly because of its size and lack of fancy patterns in the handle. Sometimes less is more and though Im no expert it looks like it will be dead easy to sharpen once the thumb studs are removed. It will do everything you can expect for a knife of its size and cost and more.

    Thumbs up from me.

I bought this knife as an EDC. This is a very sharp knife with an excellent lock. Light weight and comfortable to use.
The blade shape lends its self well to a wide variety of tasks and for me at least fills the job of EDC knife very well.

Ordered the knife yesterday and it is here today. Well done HH!

The knife itself is extreemly sharp, extreemly sturdy and fits my hand perfectly. Love the weight overall but feels a little unbalanced due to the lightness of the handle. This has not detracted from feel of the knife while in use though, only when playing with it, it feels odd that the balance point should be so far away from where I would expect it to be.

For the price of £41 this is an incredible bargin that I expect to be using for many years to come.
If you are looking for a folding knife with a scandi grind then look no further. Buy this knife!

Not pretty compared to some, but excellent performance.
    Good steel, easy to sharpen.
    Light weight but extremely strong.
Triad lock rock solid, typical Cold Steel.
Blade came sharp, after 5 minutes on the stone like a lancet.
    Highly recommended.

I admired this piece on Cold Steels "New for 2015" list and grabbed one as soon as I could. It doesn't disappoint, a classic pukko shape and grind, sharp OTB and the lock is rock solid.
It's also excellent value and made from perfect materials for this design. It would be a perfect EDC but alas our current knife laws were written by [edited, sorry].
