  1. Last Buck on a Buck !Review by

I purchased a Buck 301 Stockman in the black plastic version from HH a little while ago , as I sent my thirty odd year old one away for repair (and posted a review here on it at my general dismay at the drop in quality)
Now out of curiosity I purchased this model in the brass and wood ,I was going to try the china version but was out of stock !
So again I got the USA made with Bucks 420 HC steel
This is about as good as 420 gets with the boss heat treat ?
Well the 301 in its diamond wood turned up in super fast free delivery from HH as did the previous model
I opened the box and have to say was pleased with the wood and brass look of it ,reminded me of my old 110 buck !
Now is when things went down hill fast ! I opened the master blade and to my disbelief the edge grind was what I can only discribe as horrendous! The very tip of the blade had been broken off in the sharpening process (if a process had been used ?)
Things were no better on the other two blades either ! Now my other model with the black scales was poor but this one is I think is unbelievable ! Quality control? Not a chance on this one !
I would think Buck gave someone on a factory your this knife and said 'have a go on the grinding stone '?
Anyway plus points are there is no blade play to speak of the wood is nice the brass is nice it's a smart looking Stockman and it feels good in the hand with nice heft too it !
You maybe asking yourself why not send it back ? Well i thought about it then thought I can and have sorted the blade beckels out as on the other model , can't remember ever having a Victorinox that I needed to do that too ! And they can certainly teach Buck how to mass produce a knife and keep the highest quality control levels up ! And they are a lot less expensive than this at £56 ?
To sum up I've spent my last Buck , on a Buck ! Made in the USA ? Not for me .

  2. Good workmanshipReview by

Second Buck Stockman that I own, but the first true American example, nice brass bolsters and pins, lovely looking scales and easily sharpened blades ( which mine needed to bring to use).
As KnifeNinja reports the back springs are on the light to medium weight (especially compared to my made in China Buck) for opening or closing, but with nice tight tolerances I do not think this will be a problem. Overall a good companion.

  3. Functional, beautiful, but not flawlessReview by

Buck's 420HC - obviously going to be sharp and well heat-treated.
No bladeplay at all in any of the blades. no gaps between bolsters and the rosewood. The wood itself is really beautiful. There are some gaps where the backsprings don't sit completely flawlessly together, and there are some machining marks on the backsprings where it hasn't been completely polished. But this is pedantic and does not impede the use of the knife. the backsprings themselves are not very strong, and the there isn't really a satisfying snap when opening or closing the blades. But i don't think this is too much of a problem - all blades have what is essentially a choil, which fits the index finger nicely when using the knife, giving you good control and a safeguard to prevent the knife closing.
I prefer this to the Spyderco UKPK and Spyderco DK - it offers a traditional-style knife at a very good price.
