  1. Up and down blade playReview by

I feel i should add something that people may find useful. These knives sometimes come with up and down blade play (up and down when blade edge is facing the ground) . In my experience, this is not the lock play, but the liners moving within the frn handles. Combat this by tightening the screws that attatch the scales to the knife lock/liners. Hope this helps. Quite disappointing really after such good reviews on the web.
Lovely looking blade shape and steel finish.

Despite the name , I found the handle smooth and slippery for my dry hands.
The cheap plastic makes a hollow noise like a cardboard toilet roll tube when I hold it. It is a solid functional handle though and doesn't creak or bend.
Ergonomics wise, when I try to grip it with my thumb and forefinger tightly, my hand slides back along the handle because of the shape of it. This makes the first 20% of the handle unuseable and the handle becomes too short.

Maybe this is just me and my dry hands.

The knife is too blade heavy ... or too light at the back because it hasn't got a full liner.
Wants to fall forward a lot.

Mine also had a visibly larger grind on one side of the sharpened edge than the other.

The lock mechanism felt very newly machined and scratchy sounding but I think this gets better with use as will the tightness of the blade pivot. But I did find I could unlock by sliding just one of the buttons which was good.

Everything else good and well detailed and presented.
So a reasonable knife but not good enough for me to collect.
I will consider another Benchmade for my collection however because of the axis lock.
Just not one with this sort of handle.

Must mention HH of course, we don't shop here for no reason.

I received my black Griptilian with plain satin blade a few days ago. It's either been on my belt or in my pocket every day.

On my knife the blade deploys easily by sweeping my thumb out on the metal stud. The blade both locks out and closes very smoothly with a very satisfying thunk, since I found the right centrifugal movement of my hand to make it work every time.

This knife came out of the box with a very even, low profile edge on both sides. It is so wicked sharp that I cut the tip of my little finger very easily when closing it. Now I can eitherI close it slowly by hand, or make sure I can feel where my fingers are on the handle before closing it.

The Axis lock is an efficient design which I prefer over liner locks. Disengaging the lock button front and back by pushing it down with the thumb and index finger reveals another way both to open and close this knife one handed, making this a neat method of deployment in rescue or emergency scenarios.

Most of the weight of the knife is in the splendid heavy blade. This is what allows opening and closing the knife in so many ways. I would hazard a guess that disengaging the lock button and being able to sweep the blade open and closed with a * of one hand, would class this as a '* opening' knife, thus illegal as EDC in the UK. But this point is moot, since it's already illegal to carry through being a locking knife with a blade over 3".

I bought a black Mini Griptilian at the same time but promptly sent it back to HH since the blade was just not sharp on the side of the blade. One option to avoid this happening is to ask HH to open boxes and inspect blades before sending them.

I am more than happy with the Grtiptilian, but will probably be carrying the mini more often as EDC. The Groptilian is a very workable, satisfying knife to hold and use, and I can see why this is Benchmade's best selling knife.

RECEIVED MINE TODAY,SO WONT BE ABLE TO COMMENT ON LONG TERM. DELIVERED TOGETHER WITH SPYDERCO TENACEOUS AND SOME LANYARDS. SURPRISED HOW LIGHT THE 551 WAS,ESPECIALLY WITH THE SPYDERCO AT ITS SIDE TO COMPARE. I DO HOPE THIS DOESNT REFLECT ON STRENGTH,I DOUBT IT. SAYING THAT IT IS A LOVELY KNIFE,SMOOTH OPENING{BRILL] YOU DONT HAVE TO TOUCH THE BLADE AT ALL-OPENING OR CLOSING,AND THE CLUNK WHEN IT LOCKS..BEST SOUNDING IVE GOT. BOTH KNIVES CAME VERY SHARP[AGAIN]NON THE LESS I STILL GO OVER THEM MORE,JUST TO SEE SHARP YOU CAN GET THEM.WOWW!! I WOULD SAY NEARLY AS SHARP AS MY PARA 2,NOT MUCH IN IT BUT PARA2 WOULD BE TOUGHER. GRIP AND FEEL VERY GOOD,LOCK EXCELLENT AND OVER ALL LOOK OF 551 DEFFINATELY COMES ACROSS AS A "QUALITY"..THANX AGAIN H.H BE IN TOUCH SOON. (Posted on )

Very solid knife, definitely larger and more beautiful than the picture here. A little bit heavier than I thought, but it's perfectly fine to me. Very sharp out of the box, basically it cuts phonebook paper. The lock can be a little but tight when you receive it, but it lock really really good. No blade play or so ever, and very easy to flip open. Highly recommended! (Posted on )

Benchmade has built a legend. This legend is Griptilian.
I owe two mini Griptilians and one Griptilian like this one in picture, orange handle.

Everything is perfect on this knife:
Excellent steel, user blade shape, a wonderful (and smooth) lock, 4 position clip, lanyard hole.

Used in several mission deployments as well for food preparation for lunch as well for camping.
    Never let me down.

Only once bought the user can feel how good it is.
